THOUGHT FOR THE WEEKEND

There is a line separating dedication-to-duty from "work-a-holism". Dedication to duty is good, healthy, and positive. Work-a-holism, on the other hand, is negative, harmful and eats away at family relationships. We must know the difference between the two.

Let me tell you about a man who was called the Greatest American Soldier of the 20th Century: General George C. Marshall. Born in Uniontown, PA in 1880, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1902. As a junior infantry officer in the US Army he served two tours in the Philippines, in several stateside camps, then to Europe where he helped plan some of the great Allied campaigns of World War I. He was selected to be senior aide to General "Blackjack" Pershing; then off to duty in China.

In 1938 he was chosen by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to be Army Chief of Staff, a position he held throughout World War II. As COS he oversaw the greatest build-up ever of the Army--from 200,000 to 8.5 million soldiers. He volunteered and was considered the first-choice to lead the D-Day invasion of France, but President Roosevelt was so reliant on General Marshall that he would not let him leave Washington. In 1946 he became Secretary of State and engineered a plan to bolster the economic recovery of a devastated Europe. President Truman insisted (despite Gen Marshall's protests) that this massive undertaking be called the Marshall Plan. He was an architect of NATO and helped contain the fighting in Korea. In 1953 he was awarded the Noble Peace Prize, the only professional soldier to be accorded that honor.

It is said that at the height of World War II, despite his crushing responsibilities, General Marshall went home every afternoon to take a nap! Although we may not be able to go home and take a nap in the middle of our day, let us be on guard that we not succumb to workaholism. Let us also watch out for each other in this area!

If you: take periodic breaks from your busy work schedule, get away periodically from the demands of the job, take leave and allow yourself time to enjoy some quiet time each day... then you will be able to return to work and tackle your responsibilities with renewed vigor, dedication, and peace of mind.

Have a nice weekend and, as always, Safety First!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

Ugh. That dust and crud from the crops is a huge reason why I hope you get rain soon. Every time it looks like we’ll have some in the forecast, it goes away when the day gets closer to reality.

We have tons of people who haven’t mowed their stupid lawns since our rain, and the weeds are waist high and blooming like crazy. Which is where my allergies are originating from this month. Also, because of BiteMe, we have tons of empty houses and you know the real estate people aren’t going to mow anything. It’s sick.

I’ll just blame him for the whoe thing. LOL!

We’d love to have the dust - and pollen - tamped down, no doubt. But the bigger concern is the possibility of fires breaking out. They’ve started showing the drought map the past couple of days during the weather reports and they haven’t done that since early August. The whole state is getting too dry. They say they don’t expect much rain this month. *sigh*

Hubby’s guilty of the same thing your neighbors are ..... hasn’t mowed in ages. He finally mowed a little Wednesday but has much more to go. The grass and weed seed stems are getting close to 3 feet tall. LOL So I hear ya on allergies running rampant. :-)

Oh, noooo! You don’t need the threat of fires on TOP of everything else! Better start doing rain dances NOW!

Good grief. Just what you need right now is tall pollen-filled grasses to add to the dust and other stuff.

I guess I’d better finish this show and head out. The way I’ve been sleeping lately...not much at all...I’m going to need a head start. LOL! See ya tomorrow!

We managed to get through the same scenario during July and if we’re lucky, we’ll get through it this time without a lot of fires breaking out.

Yeah, we really need all that grass pollen on top of the dust and ragweed. LOL I told Hubby he’d better get on the tractor and start knocking it down and he did mow around the house Wednesday. But I made him stop Thursday and yesterday so I’d maybe be able to sleep. Didn’t help. I still coughed and choked on everything else in the air and got little sleep. At least I can sleep in tomorrow ... unlike you. Don’t hurt your alarm clock! LOL

Well, so far so good. We'll see how things go today. It's set to be KFC Pick Up Day and also another trip to the lake later today.

Also getting the pickup ready for the 110K checkup in a couple of weeks. Yes, 110,000 miles on the 2006 Ford Ranger.

Yesterday at Comanche Lake.

I am still struggling to get rid of the exhaustion following Covid. Bloth Blue and my walks have been neglected because all I want to do is sleep. Grrrrr. I’ve got to get some riding (and hiking) in before Winter puts a kibosh on everything.

Mirror Test
Read: James 1:22–27

Whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it . . . will be blessed in what they do. James 1:25

“Who’s in the mirror?” the psychologists conducting the self-recognition test asked children. At eighteen months or younger, children don’t usually associate themselves with the image in the mirror. But as kids grow, they can understand they’re looking at themselves. Self-recognition is an important mark of healthy growth and maturation.

It’s also important to the growth of believers in Jesus. James outlines a mirror recognition test. The mirror is “the word of truth” from God (James 1:18). When we read the Scriptures, what do we see? Do we recognize ourselves when they describe love and humility? Do we see our own actions when we read what God commands us to do? When we look into our hearts and test our actions, Scripture can help us recognize if our actions are in line with what God desires for us or if we need to seek repentance and make a change.

James cautions us not to just read Scripture and turn away “and so deceive [ourselves]” (v. 22), forgetting what we’ve taken in. The Bible provides us with the map to live wisely according to God’s plans. As we read it, meditate on it, and digest it, we can ask Him to give us the eyes to see into our heart and the strength to make necessary changes.Katara Patton

What do you see when you look into the mirror of Scripture? What changes do you need to make?

Dear God, please help me use Scripture as a mirror into my life, my motives, and my actions.
