THOUGHT FOR THE WEEKEND

There is a line separating dedication-to-duty from "work-a-holism". Dedication to duty is good, healthy, and positive. Work-a-holism, on the other hand, is negative, harmful and eats away at family relationships. We must know the difference between the two.

Let me tell you about a man who was called the Greatest American Soldier of the 20th Century: General George C. Marshall. Born in Uniontown, PA in 1880, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1902. As a junior infantry officer in the US Army he served two tours in the Philippines, in several stateside camps, then to Europe where he helped plan some of the great Allied campaigns of World War I. He was selected to be senior aide to General "Blackjack" Pershing; then off to duty in China.

In 1938 he was chosen by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to be Army Chief of Staff, a position he held throughout World War II. As COS he oversaw the greatest build-up ever of the Army--from 200,000 to 8.5 million soldiers. He volunteered and was considered the first-choice to lead the D-Day invasion of France, but President Roosevelt was so reliant on General Marshall that he would not let him leave Washington. In 1946 he became Secretary of State and engineered a plan to bolster the economic recovery of a devastated Europe. President Truman insisted (despite Gen Marshall's protests) that this massive undertaking be called the Marshall Plan. He was an architect of NATO and helped contain the fighting in Korea. In 1953 he was awarded the Noble Peace Prize, the only professional soldier to be accorded that honor.

It is said that at the height of World War II, despite his crushing responsibilities, General Marshall went home every afternoon to take a nap! Although we may not be able to go home and take a nap in the middle of our day, let us be on guard that we not succumb to workaholism. Let us also watch out for each other in this area!

If you: take periodic breaks from your busy work schedule, get away periodically from the demands of the job, take leave and allow yourself time to enjoy some quiet time each day... then you will be able to return to work and tackle your responsibilities with renewed vigor, dedication, and peace of mind.

Have a nice weekend and, as always, Safety First!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

Now THAT sounds like a well planned party with fun for all.

Tres Leches does not sound very appealing, but glad you got a cookie.

It seems like every weekend is a working weekend lately. I hope you can find a little time to chill and unwind.

Feetsies are NOT happy about the shoes, though they have good “cush” to deal with the concrete floor. Feetsies just don’t like being bound up. LOL But it’s been getting right nippy at night and was a bit cool during the day this weekend for flip flops. ‘Tis getting to be that time of year. *sigh*

I thought fella from Tupelo, who had the massive military collection, was coming up this weekend but I was a week off. it’s next weekend.
We also have several people coming from around the country with their military vehicles. There’s a big 10-day trip through the mountains that begins in Chattanooga next Saturday and these folks are going to park their trucks and trailers at the museum while they’re gone. They’ll be coming in separately throughout the day and will all want tours of the museum. Should be a blast and I’m looking forward to it.

Our nights are closing in on the high 30s and possible snow in a week or so. But, it needs to stop raining every day.

Stay warm!

Hey there, radu!

It’s been a great weekend! The weather has been close to perfect...maybe 5 degrees warmer than I really love, but not bad at all.

How were things at the museum this weekend? Any great stories to share from your visitors? I saw that it actually SNOWED/SLEETED in a corner of TN last night. That’s nuts! LOL!

Hi, Kathy! I hope you have a blessed Sunday, too! I hope you’re actually getting some R&R for a change. I saw from your live cam at Lake Hood that the autumn leaves were gorgeous!

Glad to hear your weather’s behaving and not baking you again. Maybe that’s finally over for the year.

It’s been o the cool side here. A cold front came through Tuesday and that’s what shoved Ian’s track to the east. The front was stalled by Ian and it’s been around 70 during the day and in the 40s at night here since then. Barely west of us, it’s been a lot warmer.
It’s been fairly windy here too.

The NE corner of the state got a little precip from the edges of Ian overnight and since it gets colder at night in the mountains than down here, they got that sleet and snow.

The sky’s been clear as a bell here all week and we really needed the rain they initially thought we’d get today. We could see the very edge of Ian’s cloud bank all along the mountains today but it never moved close to us.

We’ll warm up the next several days, then cool off again next weekend. It’s that time of year.

Yep, it’s the time for ups and downs in the temperatures. I sure hope you get some rain soon. And us, too....we’re drying out badly again. Tired of this!

The weather report just ended and there’s no rain in the forecast for the next week. :-(

It’s reached the point I hate to stick my head out the door because the air’s so full of dust. Makes the ol’ sinuses thump. Harvesting is far from finished around here so it’ll be nasty for a while yet.
