Japan is demanding a formal apology from Russia after Federal Security Service (FSB) agents allegedly blindfolded and interrogated a Japanese diplomat, before giving him 48 hours to leave the country.

Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said Vladivostok-based Japanese consul Motoki Tatsunori was detained and questioned by Russian agents on Monday for alleged espionage.

“The consular officer was taken away in a state of immobility, blindfolded from start to finish, with his hands and head held down, and subjected to intimidating interrogation,” Hayashi said during a press conference Tuesday.

Tatsunori was detained and declared “persona non grata” by Russia’s Foreign Ministry, according to Russian news agencies.

Hayashi condemned Tatsunori’s detention in the far eastern Russian city, saying it was “extremely regrettable and unacceptable” and there was “absolutely no evidence of illegal activities as claimed by the Russian side.”

Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori summoned Russian Ambassador Mikhail Galuzin and lodged a formal protest, demanding an official apology, Hayashi said.

The Japanese government would also be taking “appropriate measures,” he added.

Tensions between Tokyo and Moscow have been increasing, fueled by Japan’s support of Ukraine after Russia’s invasion and by the dispute between Japan and Russia over the sovereignty of islands north of Japan that were captured by Soviet forces following Japan’s surrender to Allied forces at the end of World War II.

Tatsunori had been working at the Japanese Consulate General in the Russian city of Vladivostok, a major trading port bordering China and North Korea, when he was accused by Russia of “receiving classified information.”

“A Japanese diplomat was detained red-handed while receiving classified information in exchange for money

"Last time out, Japan kicked Russia’s butt."

In all seriousness, that experience may have been part of why Japan thought they could get away with bombing Pearl Harbor. I've read that Japan kicking Russia's butt was the first time in modern history that an Asian nation did that to a European nation.

That is my understanding as well. And it did a lot to start thinking of themselves especially as, potentially, the great naval power of the Pacific.

“In all seriousness, that experience may have been part of why Japan thought they could get away with bombing Pearl Harbor. “

Yamamoto said, approximatly, “If we do this (bomb Pearl Harbor) then I shall run rampant across the Pacific winning victory after victory. After that, I can promise nothing.” He understood the difference between the US’s economy and Japan’s. It wasn’t that Japan thought they could get away with it. It was that they thought they could force a settlement on their terms after they took the Dutch oil fields. It was a complete misread of the American culture.

When FDR stopped selling oil to Japan and tied up the Dutch contracts so that their oil was also off the market, he was trying to force Japan to do something that would have resulted in significant loss of face. At stake was the inhuman treatment of China as Japan tried to force their way into an empire. America was already through with empires and was going to eventually take them all down. This move put Japan in the situation where in a little more than one year their huge and very advanced navy would be little more than a bunch of permanently moored barges. FDR forced Japan to move or become something other than the biggest bully on the block. Their society wasn’t ready to capitulate.

The worst aspect of this was that the US knew about the attack but bungled all aspects of warning and preparing for it. No conspiracy theories. The US government was and is a bumbling bunch of idiots who could, on occasion, rise above their idiocy for brief periods.

Yes, Japan definitely scored a lopsided victory in these engagements, though the Battles of Khalkhin were more of a series of large border skirmishes rather than a declared war.

Russia is trying to pi$$ off everyone. Japanese ambassador mistreated. Sri Lankan people tortured and enslaved.

If the Sri Lankans get upset, they will figure out how to punch above their weight class. It won't be pretty.

Had the Nazis shared some tank technology with the Japanese and encouraged them to attack the USSR, WWII might have ended quite differently.

Do you think Roosevelt and the US government misread the Japanese society’s non-capitulation?

“Do you think Roosevelt and the US government misread the Japanese society’s non-capitulation?”

You mean Harry Trueman? I suspect that if someone in the government understood what we now believe the Japanese meant, then he was WAY too low on the totem to ever get the ear of someone who counted. Also, the Japanese could have used someone who spoke American, as opposed to just understanding English. That was a cluster fluck on both sides. But the other reason the bombs were dropped was to warn the Soviets that they had better stop the war with what they’d already won instead of trying to steam-roll the Allies. Funny thing. No more bombs were built until after the Soviets tested theirs. Then we started building them in a panic.

Actually Japan’s defeat at Khalkhin Gol, convinced them to forget about going after the Soviet Union and Siberia, and instead focus more on the South Pacific. They had no interest in assisting Hitler in Siberia after Pearl Harbor.
