"Last time out, Japan kicked Russia’s butt."

In all seriousness, that experience may have been part of why Japan thought they could get away with bombing Pearl Harbor. I've read that Japan kicking Russia's butt was the first time in modern history that an Asian nation did that to a European nation.

That is my understanding as well. And it did a lot to start thinking of themselves especially as, potentially, the great naval power of the Pacific.

“In all seriousness, that experience may have been part of why Japan thought they could get away with bombing Pearl Harbor. “

Yamamoto said, approximatly, “If we do this (bomb Pearl Harbor) then I shall run rampant across the Pacific winning victory after victory. After that, I can promise nothing.” He understood the difference between the US’s economy and Japan’s. It wasn’t that Japan thought they could get away with it. It was that they thought they could force a settlement on their terms after they took the Dutch oil fields. It was a complete misread of the American culture.

When FDR stopped selling oil to Japan and tied up the Dutch contracts so that their oil was also off the market, he was trying to force Japan to do something that would have resulted in significant loss of face. At stake was the inhuman treatment of China as Japan tried to force their way into an empire. America was already through with empires and was going to eventually take them all down. This move put Japan in the situation where in a little more than one year their huge and very advanced navy would be little more than a bunch of permanently moored barges. FDR forced Japan to move or become something other than the biggest bully on the block. Their society wasn’t ready to capitulate.

The worst aspect of this was that the US knew about the attack but bungled all aspects of warning and preparing for it. No conspiracy theories. The US government was and is a bumbling bunch of idiots who could, on occasion, rise above their idiocy for brief periods.

Actually Japan’s defeat at Khalkhin Gol, convinced them to forget about going after the Soviet Union and Siberia, and instead focus more on the South Pacific. They had no interest in assisting Hitler in Siberia after Pearl Harbor.
