Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

That is probably the year as I remember Rodguy and I talking about its approach and aftermath. I get confused because I spent two years battling cancer from 2019 to 2021 and kind of lost track of other events — not surprisingly, LOL.

I recall he said that area had a regular issue with flooding. Ill check in with my sister to see what’s going on. You know how family is. Sometimes you have to make the decision to say ‘no more’ for your sanity. I hope he’s preparing too.

Terrible decision making and planning by that captain. And three AM in the midst of the storm? Yikes.

Reminds me of the lyrics from Kenny chesney song “BOATS”...”that’s how ‘the other side’ got her name”...

Before we go for a ride, there is always a safety briefing and an extended version for offshore fishing and Bahamas crossing. In each briefing I always say; “when it goes bad on a boat, or goes bad FAST, so follow instructions quickly and don’t argue about it”

Glad you’re safe and hope this weather is kind to you and your family

Thanks. I am in Puerto Rico, having just gone through Hurricane Fiona, but my wife has been spending the summer with family in Hernando. What are the chance of one family being impacted by two hurricanes within two weeks and 1300 miles apart!

Yes, the odds are slim when you are that far apart, for sure. I’m really hoping this one is hype, but it doesn’t look that way to me. It looks like there will be a lot of havoc with Ian.

I’m glad to hear you’re on the other side of your cancer diagnosis. That’s great news in and of itself!

My wife and SIL are arguing that both their homes are outside of the standard evacuation map danger zone. Both are just west of US 19, five miles apart north to south, but in the green colored zone or expected surge not above 26’. The county emergency management chief said expected surge is 17’.

Am I looking at this correctly? As of 20 minutes ago, storm BELOW hurricane strength?

I have a stout cable and lock, and it sits out back under the deck at the daylight basement level. Somewhat hard to locate and access.

That sounds like a good place. When we have to use ours, it’s out on the driveway but chained to a post. We live in a pretty wooded area, so downed lines are common with many storms. It can happen any time of year here, but I hate when it happens in winter. (I am very glad that we have a wood burning fireplace though. That helps me get through the winter whether or not the power is on.)

Greetings Nautinurse:

I see that earlier you designated for Front Page and Extended. Now your thread is not there (or too far down for Freepers to see).

Any possibility to get this thread bumped to both again AND also “Breaking”? ... especially since upgraded to Cat 1.

I’m sure I can say without equivocation that all Freepers appreciate your tireless efforts-—especially noting since you often have your personal hands full in these potentially perilous events.

I’m no expert on Florida, but I’d tell them both to head to higher ground - say, towards Clermont or thereabouts, if it’s reasonable. I don’t know the elevation just west of 19, but I doubt it’s extremely high. Most of FL is pretty flat.

I’ve had family living in the Tampa area for years, including Tarpon Springs and then later, Wesley Chapel (and now, Jacksonville, which is obviously a much different place).
