Vladimir Putin appeared poised to go all-in on his war in Ukraine today, sparking fears of an escalation in fighting that could drag in NATO and spark World War Three.
In a day of rapid-fire developments, Kremlin stooges in Ukraine's Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions simultaneously announced referendums on becoming part of Russia between September 23 and 27, with the sham votes expected to easily pass.
Dmitry Medvedev, a staunch Putin ally, then vowed 'all forces of self-defence' will be used to protect what he called 'Russian territory' - teeing up a new phase in the conflict involving weapons and tactics the Kremlin has so-far held in reserve.
Underlining that point, Moscow's rubber-stamp parliament passed new laws paving the war for Putin to end his 'special military operation' and officially declare a war, allowing him to mobilise Russia's massive population into the army.
It comes after Ukraine humiliatingly routed Putin's forces to the east of Kharkiv and recaptured a swathe of territory, with the despot's allies, propagandists and political hardliners calling for an escalation amid calls for the president to resign.
Putin was said to be preparing an address to the nation tonight, Russia's national broadcaster reported, without giving any further details.

If they could actually land where they want them they could be something. Hypersonics are super deadly against the navy, but you have to hit the ship to make use of it.
“...It is fair to say that I deeply love Russia and her people...”
The brave Russian people are great as exemplified by Olga Smirnova. You said you’ve been to the Bolshoi so perhaps you’ve seen her. She left Moscow because of Putin’s criminal invasion of Ukraine. Many Russians are taking a stand against the Ukrainian war, and they are persecuted and prosecuted for their stand.
Another famous prima ballerina was Maya Plisetskaya who danced into old age, directed, acted, and choreographed. Her father was executed as an “enemy of the people.” These days Putin uses the term “foreign agent” instead of the earlier phrase. Maksim Galkin is a “foreign agent” now. His more famous wife, the singer Alla Pugacheva may be declared one next. Less famous Russians are receiving seven-year prison sentences for opposing the war verbally.
Putin is making war against his own country. Why are you supporting that?
She is an icon in Russia, probably the most famous singer from the Soviet era.
Well yes, but then you’d have to actually use it against the navy instead of civilians. You’d also need to ensure you had more than a handful of them, unlike the Russians, and the ability to make more, again unlike the Russians.
And, of course, you’d have to not use them all up to blowup a few apartment buildings, unlike the Russians.
Pugacheva is well known in all of the former USSR. A few more slaps like this will certainly hurt the legitimacy of Kremlin regime and its policies.
My children are grown up and adults now. I don’t follow Russian adoption issues.
In most Baltic countries you are arrested if you show a Russian flag or sing a Russian ballad in public.
Adopted Russian children who are now adults in the US have been fired for being Russian, as have many many Russians around the world.
This is war, on both sides. We put how many Japanese Americans into camps and took their land?
In this war we are fighting for empire status, Russia is fighting to exist.
Rofl.
“...Russia is fighting to exist...”
That is a whopper piece of fiction. Russia is the invader. KGB Putin is the criminal. Ukraine is fighting to exist. You are a Moscow stooge.
Do you still beat your wife?
The West must ask itself this question: “Is it worth it?” is a world war, conventional or Nuke or a bit of both, worth Ukraine ego? If We are just fighting Russia, and just in Ukraine, its a win for the west. But, what if other nations get involved? NATO could well become a liability if say Greece and Turkey start to battle each other—or if Serbia Joins with Russia? Russia’s greatest ally is waiting in the wings—general Winter. China is also a wind card—they may sit it out and sell to both sides or join the fray seizing Taiwan as well and moving on Vietnam? What if Russia blows up the oil pipeline in Alaska? Or has sabotage teams in place, begin to take out factories that make weapons? It is a dark concept. No, this is not good. We have forgotten the horrors of World War. This time it will not just stay far away but be in our backyard. I hope to heaven I am wrong on this. I just feel a lot of folks are about to die! Thanks Joe Biden, Thanks NEOCONs, a new order is coming I fear.
I’m glad he did but you are talking about a country that borders Russia. To suggest they would should not have any influence there would be akin to Xi telling us to shut the hell up and stay out of the business of Mexico and Canada. It’s not logical, nor practical.
You all are once again spoiling for yet another war except this time with a major power and it’s not in our interests whatsoever and once again the deep state and elites are totally clueless as to their strategic goals. They blunder about like blind drunks in a locked building filled with spilled gasoline and lit candles everywhere.
We have learned absolutely nothing from debacles in Libya, Iraq or Afghanistan. Strategically the deep state and politicians are thrashing too and froe with no clue what the hell they are doing, where they want to go with foreign policy—why, is it in our interests and how to get there. They are still fighting the cold war.
You clearly don’t understand empires. There is so much education you require that I am at a loss to begin.
Let us start with Ziggy. Remember he worked under Carter.
“In particular, he writes that no Eurasian challenger should emerge that can dominate Eurasia and thus also challenge U.S. global pre-eminence.”

“Zbigniew Brzezinski recommends how Russia should be militarily weakened and intimidated. He is convinced that the best way to achieve it is by destabilizing its border regions, a political strategy that aroused the interest of former presidential candidate John Kerry’s team who recruited his son Mark Brzezinski as its foreign policy adviser.”
“In 1989, Brzezinski quit his job at Columbia University where he taught since 1960 to work on Ukraine’s independent status plan. This marks the beginning of his compromise to prevent the resurgence of Russia as a superpower.”
“He also developed a “plan for Europe” that included NATO’s expansion to the Baltic republics, a dream that came true when three of them joined NATO in 2002. During the 90s he was the special envoy of the American President to promote the most important oil infrastructure project of the world: the Baku-Tbilissi-Ceyhan pipeline which was his best opportunity to prevent the resurgence of Russia. He has also been, since 1999, the president of the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya, whose headquarters are located at the Freedom House facility. This position allows him to intervene in peace negotiations between the Russian government and independence fighters led by Mashkadov. However, the truth behind these good will “democratic” activities is to assist independence followers to maintain a war in the area, like the Afghan one, to weaken Russian and to keep it away from the gains of the Caspian Sea.”
“Brzezinski has been working also as a consultant for BP-Amoco and Freedom House in Azerbaijan.”
The Azeris just invaded Armenia and are massively slaughtering and torturing them.if you want a video link, let me know, but it is vivid.
And that leads me to the Rand report, which I will share with you next.

Are you a military veteran?
Putin is in the catbird seat. He’ll be able to simply order nato to disband.
You may think Iran is a Russian ally, but Iran is supplying artillery shells to Ukraine. In that part of the world your allies are only allies if it helps them at the moment, and switching sides is a 1000 year tradition.
“Let you and him fight!”
“Do you still beat your wife?”
I’ve beaten you.
Please leave me out of your perverse fantasies.
