Just days after Democrats passed a sweeping law that mandates "green energy" policies and spends a whopping $370 billion on wind, solar and "carbon sequestration" in an effort to "slow climate change," America's largest state is about to up the ante with a unprecedented move.
California on Thursday is expected to put into effect its sweeping plan to prohibit the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, a stunning move to force a national mandate for electric vehicles.
The move comes despite critics warning that the state's power grid could not even power 10% of its cars being electric, let alone 100%.
And just months ago, California utilities operators had to beg residents to avoid charging electric cars amid power grid strain during a heat wave.
Liberals however, are ecstatic over the move:
“This is huge,” said Margo Oge, an electric vehicles expert who headed the Environmental Protection Agency’s transportation emissions program under Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. “California will now be the only government in the world that mandates zero-emission vehicles. It is unique.”
NYTimes has more:
The rule, issued by the California Air Resources Board, will require that 100 percent of all new cars sold in the state by 2035 be free of the fossil fuel emissions chiefly responsible for warming the planet, up from 12 percent today. It sets interim targets requiring that 35 percent of new passenger vehicles sold in the state by 2026 produce zero emissions. That would climb to 68 percent by 2030.
The restrictions are important because not only is California the largest auto market in the United States, but more than a dozen other states typically follow California’s lead when setting their own auto emissions standards.

This is going to be something to watch.
Will this be the thing that destroys the state?
Newsom and the people in Sacramento are psychopaths.
Can I buy a gasoline powered vehicle in Nevada and import it into the state? Or will they prohibit me from registering it?
CA just getting better and better ....when will they wake up in the blue districts
“California will now be the only government in the world that mandates zero-emission vehicles. It is unique.”
...it’s “unique” alright, you putz.
Newsom and the people in Sacramento are psychopathic traitors.
if there was a constitution, it would be interesting to test the constitutionality of this
If Russia, China or Iran wanted to attack and damage our nation, they would love to do just 1/10th the damage this will do.
This is Insane.
That is, NOT Sane.
Nothing is logical about any of their plan, as explained in detail my many studies.
Just how do they think they will make it work?
By fiat? Newsom will speak: Let there be electricity.
(He might just get a strong personal jolt from the sky!)
“The problem is white suprememcy, or climate change, or ??”
We must just Try Harder!!!
Make the date sooner, raise the CAFE average, and repeat and increment up daily.
“be free of the fossil fuel emissions chiefly responsible for warming the planet”
They’re wrong, but from their point of view, ‘even if we’re wrong, we’re right.’ There is ZERO possibility that in the lifetime of anyone reading this, that ANY action that can be taken by our society today will make a detectable change in the atmosphere within the next 100 years or even 200 years.
And don’t get me started on the Chinese/India contribution.
35 percent by 2026
how will they enforce this?
do they say?
if not enough people are buying evs will they shutter ice car dealerships?
Mine is zero emissions about 23 1/2 hours of most days.
Seems like that should count for something.
they could make it exorbitantly expensive to do so
the only way they can meet these goals is to make ice cars too expensive to operate
forcing people into evs
if you cannot afford an ev get on the bus or bike
Just going to make sure my EV truck has a diesel generator in the paybed.
Wait till the EVs get stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway and then the battery runs down.
How do you know how many sales you'll make in a year before the year is over? I know there are projections and averages, but how do you say "for every 100 cars sold, 68 of them have to be electric."? A guy driving a pickup truck for work can't use a Tesla.
Do the car dealerships stop selling new cars at a certain point every month and say "sorry folks, gotta sell six more EVs before we can allow you to buy that F150." ?
Obviously there's a hole for used vehicles, and maybe there's a commerce clause loophole for vehicles brought into the state (but I doubt it), but this is just madness.
I'm sure nobody thought about apartment complexes or on street parking, or the fact that most of the Bay area is a constant open crime wave of vehicle break ins. How do you charge a car overnight on a city street like that. Absolute lunacy.
California was such a beautiful state once.
