Whole Foods CEO John Mackey ‘concerned’ that ‘socialists are taking over’
New York Post ^ | August 11, 2022 | Lee Brown

Whole Foods co-founder and exiting CEO John Mackey has said he is “deeply concerned” that “socialists are taking over” the country.

“They’re marching through the institutions — they’re taking everything over,” the 68-year-old executive told Reason magazine in an interview just weeks before he finally steps down from the supermarket giant.

“They’ve taken over education. It looks like they’ve taken over a lot of the corporations. It looks like they’ve taken over the military,” he said of his main “concern.”

“And it’s just continuing,” he warned.

He described himself as a “capitalist at heart” and said he believes in liberty.

“And I feel like with the way freedom of speech is today — the movement on gun control — a lot of the liberties that I’ve taken for granted most of my life, I think, are under threat,” he said.

Mackey complained that increased unemployment benefits offered during the pandemic put a real strain on Whole Foods’ ability to hire staff.

“A lot of people were making as much money, if not more money, not working at all. And so guess what? They chose not to come back to work. They got used to it,” he said.

However, the biggest hiring crisis has been because “the younger generation … don’t seem to want to work,” he said.

“They only wanna work if it’s really purposeful, and [something] they feel aligned to,” he said of a shift to woke principles, noting it was particularly in major Democratic cities including the Big Apple.

“You can’t hope to start with meaningful work. You’re gonna have to earn it over time,” he said. “Some of the younger generation doesn’t seem to be willing to pay that price, and I don’t know why.”

There is a reason they call it "work". They aren't paying you to have fun …

The irony here is that Whole Foods makes their money catering to the wokesters who buy their overpriced stuff.

It is because they’ve lost God.
Where there is no God, there is no reason - in any shape or form.

“Some of the younger generation doesn’t seem to be willing to pay that price, and I don’t know why.”

Taught they are “special”.
Given a trophy just for showing up.
Allowed, encouraged rather, to choose their gender.
Parents want to be their “best friend”.
I could go on, but…

He is a socialist. He’s just jumping ship now to try to distance himself from his decisions.

“....the 68-year-old executive told Reason magazine in an interview just weeks before he finally steps down from the supermarket giant.”

It’s easy (and safe) for Mackey to openly express his concerns just as he is on his way out. In any event, what he is saying is true.

He sounds like an OK guy.

It’s ironic that so many of the Whole Foods customer base is pretty representative of the problem he is describing.

I know why: They have never been hungry or even threatened with being hungry.

When we boomers came into the workforce, particularly those of us in the middle tier of the boomers, there were much many more of us than their were jobs. Even McDonald's type jobs were valued. I thought I was in fat city because I scored a job that paid $2.10 per hour, a whole 30 cents over the minimum wage.

To get a meaningful job after earning an MBA, I had to move to Japan.

My local Whole Foods is a great store...they source meat and produce locally.

More importantly, the manager is a normal person. She hated the mask mandates, and confided that her employees weren't all-in on vaccinations. In fact she said basically everyone wound up contracting the virus regardless of vaxx status and isolation rules wreaked havoc with scheduling staff.

The clientele, however, is a grab-bag of normals and masked Karen's who lose their mind over whatever.

I used to stop at Whole Amazon Foods occasionally. But they are one of the stores where I am legally not allowed to carry my concealed weapon; so I now eschew them.

Too many young people have accepted the idea that social justice = equality of outcomes. All lifestyle choices are equally valid. The slacker lifestyle is ok. The work 60 hour a week, take risks, strive to achieve lifestyle is ok. As long as the socialists and the slackers can use the Great Redistribution Machine, aka government, to equalize outcomes, they will continue to do so.

If you have a business today you need to be worried. Very worried. The democrats plan to set up laws and tax laws in such a way that you’ll actually be working for the government. Your efforts will not result in money for you. The fruits of your efforts will be funneled automatically to the greedy government, which will give them to indolent slobs who vote democrat.
