The one-two punch of inflation and rising crime has caused at least one New York City store to lock up its inventory of Spam in a plastic case.
Shoppers, store employees, and social media users expressed disbelief after discovering the $3.99 canned meat product out of reach behind lock and key at a Duane Reade inside New York City’s Port Authority bus depot, the New York Post reported.
"I’ve never seen that before!" one cashier laughed while removing the Spam from its plastic anti-theft covering.
"Some of these things are pretty ridiculous," said Jenny Kenny, a 43-year-old visiting town from Kentucky who says she was aware of the crime spike in the city but still couldn’t believe there were "so many" items in boxes.
Other shoppers wondered why Spam, along with $1.89 cans of Starkist tuna, were locked up while more expensive products like $5.49 cans of Amy’s soup were not.
"To put Spam in a cage is stupid — and kind of insulting to the customers that would buy it," 46-year-old shopper Dennis Snow said.
Crime in New York City is up this year in six of seven major categories and the New York Post reported that petty larceny complaints are up 52% in the precinct where the Port Authority is located compared to last year.

“I developed a liking for split pea soup with ham bits in the same way...”
Hey, you can’t split pleas like that! (name that movie, eh)
I keep a few cans around for the zombie apocalypse. Had some fried up with my raspberry cheese blintz pancakes this morning. I even have a dedicated spam slicer. We’ve been consuming more spam lately since bacon prices have doubled.
Same with dinty Moore beef stew.
Now Amazon limits purchase quantity.
All you need to know about what’s coming too.
Probably because many are stocking up on canned goods such as Spam and tuna, and also canned salmon and chicken. I've bought some extra of all those and I think many others who can't be classified as preppers are doing the same.
I forgot to add. Shop lifters are probably doing a little stocking up, also, so some retailers might find it necessary to put popular stock up items behind lock and key.
Me neither! I often wondered why people eat Spam at all. But my brother loves the stuff. Fries it with eggs, makes sandwiches with it etc.etc.
I was in a Walmart in suburban Maryland last week. They had ordinary men’s underwear locked in a glass case. WTF?
I get spam every day in my email. They can have mine.
What? Oh, never mind.
Spam, egg, and cheese sammich.
Yum!!!
My dad loved pork and beans and also liked Spam. I liked pork and beans until I stopped eating pork. Do you know that pigs have higher IQs than dogs? I’d never eat your dog either. Had a good chat about that with meat manager at my local Safeway.
“Calm yourself dear I’ll have your Spam.’’
“I love it!’’
“Well there’s eggs, bacon sausage Spam eggs , sausage and Spam, it ain’t got much Spam in it’’.
Pigs will also eat anything from dead
possums to rabbit droppings to mesquite beans. They are tasty though...
Spam omelet: 6 eggs, can of spam, fresh mushrooms, sautéed onion, fresh tomatoes, fresh spinach or chard, with a dash of Tony’s and boom, your good. Some sourdough biscuits on the side.
I like to put pintos in there, but that’s just me.
