RIP
Thank you, sir. Rest in Peace.
I’ve met Woody a couple times. A heck of a nice guy. This is good for him, but a loss for the planet.
This closes a vital chapter in American History, the bravery and the honor of these soldiers, honored with the highest citation of our Nation. Rest In Peace, Heroes.
He was a very short man, like 5-3 or 5-4, he was not in the first wave on Iwo Jima, when he came ashore the Marines were bogged down taking one of the airfields on Iwo Jima, his commanding officer asked him if he could take out 1 of the 4-5 Japanese bunkers stopping the advance, he took on the assignment with a flame thrower, under covering fire, he managed to get on top of the first bunker and shot a flame thru the air vent that destroyed the bunker, he continued on destroying multiple Japanese Bunkers, multiple times he had to retrieve addition tanks for the flame thrower from the beach.
He was also on the ground when the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi.
What an incredible man with an incredible story.
RIP, may God bless
question: the DM has a picture of him wi the CIB
would this be a situational/inter-service award only issued during the war?
never seen it before, and it’s a real pic
RIP
This is truly a milestone. A bittersweet one in that the last member of a generation of young Americans who were asked to do perhaps the most challenging and courageous undertaking in all of human history like no other generation before or since is gone.
And most Americans today have no clue.
Thank you for my freedom Mr. Williams.
May the earth rest lightly on you.
A very sad day...
R.I.P Woody Williams...
An American Hero...
Semper Fi...
The Marines don’t get the CIB. If someone got the CIB for earlier Army service they can get permission to wear the CIB. The Marines have the Combat Action ribbon but it wasn’t created until 1969.
Looks like a heck of a guy.
God bless him, and I hope to get to meet him one day.
Bttt.
5.56mm
i don’t know if he was in the Army before the Marines, but i doubt it
here’s the pic
Oh, I believed you. I just don’t know why a Marine would have a CIB. Maybe a special circumstance of some sort. He certainly deserved one, as did all the Marines on IWO. As far as I’m concerned they all deserve a MOA.
