Parades, street festivals and speeches mark Juneteenth across U.S

ATLANTA (Reuters) - With street parties, the trumpets and drums of marching bands, speeches and a few political rallies, people across the United States marked Juneteenth this weekend, a jubilee commemorating the end of the legal enslavement of Black Americans.

Events started on Friday and continued through Sunday featuring concerts at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, freedom walks in Galveston, Texas, and jazz music in New York City's Harlem neighborhood.

"This is America's holiday, not just African Americans' holiday," said Gerald Griggs, the Georgia state president of the NAACP civil rights organization. "It's the true Independence Day, the day when all Americans were free."

In 2021, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday, and most states and many companies give it recognition and hold celebrations.

In a proclamation on Friday, Biden remarked on the 10 people slain in a racist mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, on May 14.

"We must stand together against white supremacy and show that bigotry and hate have no safe harbor in America," the proclamation said.

You did notice that the first national celebration of Juneteenth falls on Father’s day?

Second. It was first celebrated last year.

One of the states where slavery ended in December 1865 is Delaware. Biden owes us an explanation.

My wife watches the Hallmark channel. Most every day. I call it the Middle-aged White Women”s channel.

I was walking by the TV last night and that channel had a little watermelon slice motif displayed on the lower right side of the screen. Something about celebrating summer. I nearly died with laughter.

I said they are going to live to regret that. Don’t they know that watermelon is a racist symbol? Already the Hallmark channel has been under fire for nothing but white people in all the episodes. And no queers

Which is fine. If blacks can have their own TV channel, if Mexicans can have their own, if queers can have their own, why can’t middle-aged white women enjoy a channel like the Hallmark channel?

The northern city states are bastions of leftwing power. City State Black voters are the key to holding that power.

The Juneteenth Black ass kissing political charade is an effort at yet more appeasement to buy votes

That’s a name I haven’t heard of in years. I guess it applies to that channel. Is she still active? Perhaps she’s on that channel. Don’t know, don’t care. Lol.

I have no clue. I came up with that in the late 90’s, I think.

The bars and restaurants were flooded with food stamps, EBT’s, and Obamaphone toters, celebrating whitey’s support of their “plight”.

Didn’t you get the memo? If Fathers day and juneteemph fall on the same day, the latter takes precedence. Otherwise, well, you know. The “r” word. I notice the National Weather Service is on board labeling today “that”. Not Sunday, not Fathers day. And I got an email from Veterans Canteen Service this morning with suggestions how to celebrate juneteemph. đŸ™„đŸ‚đŸ’©

I was joking with the teller at my local bank on Friday about Monday being a holiday.

“Because why?”

She wisely said because the Federal Reserve would be closed.

I suspect this new holiday will have a similar trajectory as Earth Day did in the U.S. Lots of whipped up passion and attention from both sides of the discussion, devolving into ambivalence and apathy less than 10 years later.

Is this another one of those ‘holidays’ embraced by single white female elementary school teachers?
