Diocese: 'Irreplaceable' $2M Tabernacle Stolen From Brooklyn Catholic Church

A tabernacle valued at $2 million was stolen from a Roman Catholic church in Brooklyn over Memorial Day weekend, according to the New York Police Department.

Officials also say statues of angels flanking the church altar were decapitated over the weekend.

The tabernacle theft likely occurred sometime between 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church near Slope Park, according to police officials.

How did vandals accomplish this much damage at the church? Police say power tools were used to "forcefully cut open" the altar and access the 18-karat-gold tabernacle — which has been part of the St. Augustine design since the 1890s.

According to The Guardian, the tabernacle box contained holy communion items and was also decorated with jewels.

The tabernacle bore the description of a "masterpiece and one of the most expensive tabernacles in the country, guarded by its own security system," which involves an "electronically operated burglar-proof safe" and 1-inch thick steel plates that "completely enclose the tabernacle."

In a media statement, the Diocese of Brooklyn said the stolen tabernacle "is irreplaceable due to its historical and artistic value. The Holy Eucharist housed inside the tabernacle was thrown all over the altar." Regarding the angel statues, the decapitation likely coincided with the tabernacle theft, according to officials.

Why don’t high profile churches have security cameras on the altar area 24/7?

It’s disgraceful, disturbing and even discouraging, but we of the Catholic Church are more that a collection of expensive relics. The real church is within each believer.

Meanwhile, as another poster brought up,
get some security cameras installed.
Get some modestly priced replicas for display, and bring out the real article for special ceremonies only.
Act defensively in year 2022.

Time to talk to Tony and his boys about finding out who did this and taking care of things.

Hey Newsmax. It’s Park Slope, not Slope Park

Yeah, years ago the Mafia would handle crimes against the Church. Don’t know if they have that kind of attitude or muscle nowadays.

The Catholic hierarchy has been promoting Marxism, a form of theft. Now the thieves are coming for them.

I wonder where one would ‘fence’ a tabernacle? It’s not like this item has a large market. And the thieves had to be fairly intelligent probably wearing asbestos gloves because for a democrat touching a religious item is like a vampire touching holy water.

That didn’t take long.

Anti-Catholic bigotry in the tenth post.

satan doesn’t just want their souls. He knows they will be burning with him in hell forever. But he wants action.

Hate without bad works is not enough hate for satan.

This is as clearly satan as you can get. We are under attack from satan. He has the White House and The Congress. Don’t let him get any further.

Pray for help from God.

That was my mother’s church when she was a young girl. My aunt and uncle were married there.

Is it bigotry to post something that is quantifiably true? Over the past century the RCC has increasingly sanctioned theft as a means of implementing Marxist policies.

Why should Marxist clerics be surprised when the thieves they encourage redistribute chuch wealth?

I went to school at near by Saint Thomas Aquinas. For HS I went to Holy Trinity in Williamsburg. Back then when meeting new people we’d commonly ask, “what parish are you from.” Lots of competition between the neighborhoods back then; basketball, baseball and football. Absolutely the best time of my life and I still have friends from the old neighborhood. NYC was the Big Apple back then, not the Rotten Apple it is today. incidentally, a crime like this would have been solved in a day or two, using a variety of methods :)

This is going to happen more and more. Churches either don’t have the money to have good security or still are naive enough to think that people won’t rob or vandalize a church. And churches still are the best target for SJWs to vandalize to make a statement about the evils of White Christian society. Its sad.
