With less than two weeks before the primary election, State Sen. Doug Mastriano was leading in the polls, and some of the candidates and their aides were holding out hope Trump would use the rally to endorse a rival who could topple the front-runner.
But behind the scenes, some of the most influential players in Pennsylvania Republican politics were hatching a plan of their own to stop Mastriano, who they saw as a potential liability in a general election. That afternoon, Andy Reilly, a Republican National Committee member, sent an email to associates of the leading candidates.
It included a proposal for a poll that would help the party rally behind a single alternative to Mastriano. “As of now we are looking at this being advisory,” Reilly wrote. “However, I believe it would be best to commit to go with the candidate who is closest to M and rally behind him or her.”

A prominent Republican active in Pennsylvania politics, who requested anonymity to speak freely about party conversations, predicted that some prominent GOP members will publicly support Shapiro over Mastriano. And after November’s general election, Tabas may see a call for a new party chair.

Vonne Andring, senior adviser to the state GOP, defended the party’s decision. “With record Republican turnout, and with 44% of the vote going to Mastriano — despite the millions spent against him — it should be obvious that there is a much stronger appeal for his candidacy than many predicted,” she said in a statement. “Political malpractice would be to signal to our voters that we’re not with them — or to delay turning our efforts to defeating Josh Shapiro and the extreme Democrat agenda in November.”

And of course Charlie Sent is involved, the Arlen Specter of the House delegation (thank God he's gone from a position of real power).
God forbid they just get behind who the Republican electorate supports. But ya see, only conservatives have to hold their nose and vote for the Republican nominee. THEY just vote for the Democrat, and not holding their nose, but gleefully.
We're going to beat them anyway.
Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Politicians are mostly awful people, who normal people detest. I'll be voting straight Republican in November because I hate Democrats more than Republicans, but it's close.
“The latest example came Friday, when the Washington Post published an article about a master’s thesis Mastriano wrote 20 years ago in which he warned of a potential “Hitlerian putsch” in the U.S.”
Mastriano was not wrong.
Of course, it is what assistant Democrap RINOs do.
While our household supported Lou Barletta, we will vote for Mastriano in November. Tom Wolf does NOT deserve a third term.
Isn’t a “Beer Hall Putsch” what the 1/6 imposters claim happened?
Sounds like the crap from the RNC. Worst traitors in the nation.
I don’t understand how the political machine can misread the electorate so badly, ignoring the will for candidates that will bring revenge on the malefactors that stole the general election.
No matter what flaws a candidate has (within reason), they will vote for the one who will bring forth a pound of flesh from everyone involved.
This is really a single issue election. We want blood.
Let them out themselves so they can be driven from the party and never hold a position of power again. Democrats won’t trust them either so they had better brush up on their 7-11 counter skills.
The letter after the name means jack anymore.
The only reason political parties still exist is to give voters the illusion of choice.
A pol is either loyal to our former republic or to Deep State.
Most of PA’s pols are Deep State.
They don’t “misread” the electorate. They ignore the electorate unless the electorate is in their useful idiots column. Trading in the rose colored glasses for something clearer is highly recommended.
Good!
The Stupid Party deserves to have it’s manufactured chosen candidate defeated!
As the GOP nominee Mastriano will have my vote, but I’ve been saying for months that the guy will be lucky to get 40% of the vote in November.
How much effect will Biden have on the outcome? Will Dems stay home? Will some vote mastriano? It will interesting to see.
Yes, my family also sent 5 votes for Lou Barletta. We will enthusiastically vote for Mastriano and donate funds to his campaign. We will NOT vote for RINO Oz. Nope, not going to do it. Trump screwed the pooch on this one. He should have stayed out of the Pennsylvania races (or endorsed Carla Sands).
If Steve K Bannon reads FR post, I ask you to please not invite Oz on your War Room show. Oz will bring your show down. Oz is persona-non-grata in our house hold.
I would bet the high profile “republican” that is not named in this article is senate pro-tempore Jake Corman. He is a Mitch McConnel snake in the grass.

Well said, Mewzilla!
They don’t necessarily misread the electorate. They want their guy or revenge if a different candidate beats their guy in the primaries.
Given the computer voting machines to be used, any Republican anywhere will be lucky to win or ise someone deemed useful to the Democrats.
