A new study of monozygotic twins raised apart in South Korea and the United States provides unique insight into how genetic, cultural, and environmental factors influence human development. The new research has been published in the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences.
“I have studied identical twins reared apart for many years. They pose a simple, yet elegant experiment for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on human traits. This case was unique in that the twins were raised in different countries,” said researcher Nancy L. Segal, a professor and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University in Fullerton.

Have to wonder if the incidence of drug use among separated identical twins is different in South Korea v the United States. Also are identical twins separated in Korea for social or cultural reasons? In the US if twins or any children are separated from their biological parents, there is a good chance the parents were not upstanding citizens and these children were exposed in utero to a wide variety of drugs and other substances. There is always more to the story.
The kid raised in the US isn’t sure whether they/them are a boy or a girl?

Since the results seem to be an indictment of U.S. television, popular culture, and public schools, I am willing to waive my usual caveats about small sample sizes and endorse these findings without reservation.
As a matter of public policy, the public schools are the place to begin because they are fully under government control.
The second key observation is that Tiger Moms are good if you want to raise smart, high achieving kids. Every family should have a Tiger Mom.

Doesn’t matter. I taught college for a few years and found it never mattered. So many kids bragged about their “charter” schools and all those special programs, yet, not a single kid impressed me. Not a single one could write a paper or perform college level Algebra while trying to take a Calculus class. Their work ethic was that of a 10 year old, and if they did poorly they felt it was the professor’s fault.
A ‘C’ today was yesterday’s ‘F’. If anyone is hiring, make sure the idiot has at least a 3.85 GPA for any degree in the past 10 years or they really didn’t learn much. Grade inflation is out of control. No one is allowed to flunk.
I have no desire to see our western, Euro-descended country turn into East Asia.
Since the elites want every man, woman, and child working, they don’t want those three months for summer off. It makes parents want to stay home with their kids and not work. Not to mention, children used to work in this country up until about 75 years ago when the school systems pushed to make school mandatory.
That's the way it was in Japan, where I raised my kids and sent them to the local public school except for the oldest who was left-handed and we sent to an international school run by the Catholics.
The biggest difference is what goes on in the classroom. My middle daughter, who was in about the middle of the pack on math (as reported by the Japan equivalent of our Iowa basics tests) was suddenly in the 94th percentile when we moved to one of the better school districts in Pennsylvania.
They actually got better American history instruction in the Japan public school system than they did here. OTOH, they didn't have time to learn about sexual deviancy being normal and normalcy being deviant, LOL!
Little to do with school and more to do with home.
SJW’s closing the IQ gap in America have discovered that dumbing down is easier than smartening up. Politicians prefer it too.
It would be interesting to know the parents IQ but does seem to conform to other evidence that low-income children, at least in the US, have fewer opportunities for their genetic potential to flourish. If I recall correctly the heritability of intelligence among poor children has been put somewhere around 25% vs 60-70 from wealthy families. For poor children in the South Korea as well (?), the family environment seems to matter quite a bit.
My sister is at the end of her career as a junior high and high school math teacher. In her 45 years, she has seen the USA go from #1 globally in math results to #38. That happened in less than two generations!
But we are #1 in self esteem.
I spent a few years (late 80s to early 90s) as an adjunct professor in the Business School of our university.
Clearly, it was obvious which students came from a solid HS program and which came from failed programs - their speech was a VERY clear indicator.

However, the twins ... also had a similar level of satisfaction with their job, even though their occupations were quite different — a government administrator and a cook.
Assuming the cook is the American, I'll take an individualist cook with lower IQ than a bright, collectivist bureaucrat any day of the year.
