A new study of monozygotic twins raised apart in South Korea and the United States provides unique insight into how genetic, cultural, and environmental factors influence human development. The new research has been published in the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences.

“I have studied identical twins reared apart for many years. They pose a simple, yet elegant experiment for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on human traits. This case was unique in that the twins were raised in different countries,” said researcher Nancy L. Segal, a professor and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University in Fullerton.

The researchers found “striking” differences in cognitive abilities. The twin raised in South Korea scored considerably higher on intelligence tests related to perceptual reasoning and processing speed, with an overall IQ difference of 16 points.

Nature versus nurture? Nurture!

Doesn't prove intelligence has no genetic component, but upbringing really does count.

So raise your kids in South Korea, where television programming and public school won’t make them stupider.

This has been known for some time.

It is just no one wanted to admit it.

There is a floor and ceiling probably but overall you can both increase and decrease IQ with the correct stimuli.

And the US spends more $ per pupil than any other industrialized nation. I’m sure the Teacher’s union will do everything it can to suppress this research.

It would be more persuasive if it wasn't a "one-of".

This is one case, involving 1 set of twins.

Nothing surprising. On a slightly different note, Singapore, China, Korea etc do have world beating children in terms of test scores. However, the US usually does better at the finish line, later in life. Achievements early, are not an end point.

East Asian culture (at least in Japan and the ROK) compels kids to study 10-12 hours a day,6 days a week and compels adults (at least men, don't know about women) to work 10-12 hours a day,6 days a week. It shouldn't be a surprise that they're smarter than we are.

They also don’t take 3 months off per year from school, an obsolete legacy of America’s agricultural past.

Interesting study. I have twins though they are not identical.

I think it goes to show that our education system could use a total overhaul.

Ya can’t. Lots of cultures are risk averse. The pressure to stick it out and conform. Throw in other cultural factors that we don’t have here.

There is nothing surprising in this result we have completely dumbed down our education process and our population.
