As Coffins Come Home, Russians Confront Toll of Ukraine Invasion
The Wall Street Journal ^ | May 4, 2022 | Evan Gershkovich

There wasn’t much left of Russian army Sgt. Andrei Akhromov’s body when it arrived in a zinc coffin at his hometown, a four-hour drive south of Moscow, relatives said. The 21-year-old died in April near the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv when his tank was hit by enemy fire.

Sgt. Akhromov’s cousin, Sergei Akhromov, said a representative of the regional governor’s office told the family it took the armed forces three weeks to identify what remained of him using DNA analysis. Loved ones didn’t look into the casket before burying him last week, he said.

“I only blame America—not Ukraine, not Russia,” Mr. Akhromov, a 32-year-old parks-and-recreation worker, said. “Biden, or however he is called, allowed for Nazism to flourish in Ukraine, and so Russia had to fight not only to protect its people and borders, but also the Ukrainian people, women, children, elderly.”

More than two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine, Russians are beginning to confront the toll of the war. Mr. Putin has justified his actions by saying Ukraine, which has a Jewish president, is run by Nazis—a claim for which he hasn’t provided evidence.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in late March that 1,351 Russian soldiers had died in what it calls a “special military operation.” It hasn’t released any casualty numbers since. Western governments estimate that as many as 15,000 Russians have died—more than the total lost over the course of the Soviet Union’s decadelong war in Afghanistan.

Yes, the war would have been quickly over had Ukraine simply surrendered the day the Red Army invaded. What would the peace agreement entailed? Acknowledgment of Russia’s seizure of Crimea, recognition of the two ‘independent regions’, a promise to never join NATO or the EU—anything else? Perhaps reabsorption back into mother Russia?

Ukraine would then become the springboard for invasion of Moldavia.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania would likely be next.

I see Parks and Rec workers are idiots there too.

My guess is the Russians will find as many Nazis in Ukraine as we can find white supremacists here.

Putin is the mascot for Godwin’s Law - when everybody is Hitler, nobody is Hitler.

It’s sad these people are so lost.

But dead Russians coming home in boxes is the only way this ends.

After a while, the Russian mothers will figure out their leaders are liars.

So, I look forward to thousands more going home. Burned and maimed. Let’s end this.

I am so tired of “Russia is accustomed to losing people in war.” Such bullshit. They haven’t had a significant conflict for 30 years. They aren’t “accustomed” to this.

And while old fools will say such a thing, when your son comes home in a box you don’t dare open, I can assure you..no one is “accustomed” to that.

Stupid war. Russian troops are cannon fodder. The Russian Federation is an empire. It needs to be split up.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan wasn't that bloody. Not as bad as Vietnam or Korea.

The last bloody war the Soviets were in was all the way back in 1945.

Russians have long memories. How many of their family members were killed in WW2? 20mil, 30 mil? We have no idea what it’s like to be in their shoes. It would behoove us to understand them rather than insist on being at war with them. This is NATO’s war. They wanted it. They got it, and I’m already sick of it.

The problem is that’s not true. The Ukrainian President Trump who was Biden and his corrupt sons ally was overthrown by Zelinski. I’m stunned at the number of people on FR that don’t know that. That’s like blaming Trump for pulling out of Iraq. Or calling Trump a war monger.

The people of Ukraine wanted the corruption cleaned up but that doesn’t happen overnight. The reason this thing is still going on is because Biden drug his feet.

You write, “Russians are far from stupid.” Then give me one example of a major benefit Russia has brought to Western Civilization.

I’d start the list with Mendeleyeev and Dostoevsky.

Dostoevsky was a determined Slavophile who wanted Russia to have nothing to do with Europe. You should have used Tergenev for your example, but a Westernizer he was pilloried. As for Mendeleev, I’m sure he was important although I have never heard of him unless it is the guy who experimented with plants.

Oh please. If he wasthat bad he would have fled when Putin invaded. You apply no logic or common sense. He’s was in office for two years and you expect me to believe he stole billions? Even the Biden crime family couldn’t do that.

I agree.

I think it has been a hard call on this one too. There are
arguments to be had both ways. I didn’t buy off on the
Russian (what I see as) propaganda, but it wasn’t totally
irrational.

I’ve watched Russia run propaganda for a long long long
time.

It just doesn’t have the affect on me it does others. I
automatically see it for what it is.

To others it can look compelling. It doesn’t help that
we have had some real world class clowns on our side too,
like Soros and other globalists. Obame was chin deep in
it also.

I understand where everyone is coming from. I just can’t
side with Russia here.
