Japan’s defense ministry reported it had tracked four large Russian ships transporting troops through a strait north of the country and heading west. ... The Defense Ministry published photos that depicted a vessel identified as one typically used to land expeditionary forces for amphibious assaults. One vessel appeared to have military trucks loaded onto its deck, The Mainichi reported. ... The spokesman added that it is unusual for Russian ships to pass through the strait so close to Japanese territory.
Japan recently reiterated its claim over the disputed Kuril Islands, which have served as a point of contention between Japan and Russia.
Russia seized the islands, formerly part of Hokkaido Prefecture, at the end of World War II. Japan has labored in the decades since to secure them again, recently stressing that it believes the islands remain "primordially Japanese" and labeled Russia’s ownership as "occupation against international order."
Japan has supported and enact strong sanctions against Russia in reaction to the invasion of Ukraine, most notably by joining the U.S. and European allies to remove Russian banks from the international SWIFT financial system in late February.
Japan also froze assets belonging to President Vladimir Putin and other top Russian officials while sending $100 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Those ships would have to go a long way to get to the Black Sea.
Did they say “Odessa or Bust” on them? If not, who knows where they’re heading.
Russian navy is a joke.
They probably followed the smoke trail from their coal fired engines.
More likely “Kirilroy was here”
Hmm let me see. Seen this before. A nation sends a naval flotilla on a long journey to keep a chunk of teritory in the empire. A nation of shop keepers comes to mind
Surface maybe, but they have not focused on that aspect of their navy so much.
Tue nukes on their subs I dont regard as a joke.
Did Turkey close the Bosporus to warships?
Wouldn’t it be faster to move them by rail, even all the way across siberia?
Their navy is really really bad. A joke really with a series of disasters for years.
Maybe they’re headed to free Russians in Alaska.
Oh God no really !
That might be true
But consider our president is really really bad.
Russia and China could have lesser militaries but if they pull off so ewhat successful surprise first strike, with Slow Joe “at the helm” many of us are in grave danger.
Almost like admiral Rozhestvensky’s 1905 voyage in reverse.
And there is the Bosporus Straight to get through and I have read that Turkey is not allowing warships to pass.
...... Aren’t a lot of Nukes launched from warships in an effort to minimize the flight time for the missile to reach it’s target???
That’s how they conquered Manchuria in a month. Then again this isn’t that army.
I have a ton more respect for our navy, and that’s not saying much.
i have been reading old family letters from the 40s from a sailor
they really went through a lot of training...didn’t get paid much.
I knew that you had to pay back Red Cross but when you read about a wife that has a borrow $10 bucks so her husband on the other side of the US can pay back the Red Cross it kind of hacks you off. 10 bucks was a lot of money back then.
It seems a lot of the men had bad teeth. So many they had to construct a big facility to handle the dental work. the letter said the dentists treat them like horses and it hurts like hell.
I do too, generally speaking. I wouldn’t necessarily want to live that life for a number of years, especially having to deal with tight quarters with people you may not click so well with.
