They probably followed the smoke trail from their coal fired engines.

And there is the Bosporus Straight to get through and I have read that Turkey is not allowing warships to pass.

That was my first thought.

But if they're heading west from north of Japan, as the article says, they're going to bump into Korea. Pretty dry sailing for the next 5,000 miles.

The last time a Russian fleet made such a voyage it was in the opposite direction and did not turn out well.
