Ukraine war 'catastrophic for global food'

By Emma Simpson Business correspondent, BBC News

The boss of one of the world's biggest fertiliser companies has said the war in Ukraine will deliver a shock to the global supply and cost of food.

Yara International, which operates in more than 60 countries, buys considerable amounts of essential raw materials from Russia.

Fertiliser prices were already high due to soaring wholesale gas prices.

Yara's boss, Svein Tore Holsether, has warned the situation could get even tougher.

"Things are changing by the hour," he told the BBC.

“Maybe we can quit using corn for fuel? Manure is still used. Just not enough to go around.”

Yeah, the age-old conundrum: Corn for fuel; or corn for liquor. I don’t know which one is cheaper to make, as they are both ethanol. Maybe there is no difference in cost.

They’re going to make food, fuel and other essentials so expensive that the economy takes a hit and they can start Universal Basic Income-like payments with a new digital US Dollar.

“I’m staggered by the near complete lack of leadership in this country.”

“Heartbreakingly sad.”

Agreed.

Well, in a pinch there is the old standby of manure and poop. Again, in a pinch.

About half of the world's food supply depends on manmade fertilizer, mostly from natural gas.

A story I heard about Audrey Hepburn (not sure if it is true.)

She nearly starved to death under Nazi occupation. Since then, she used to make sumptuous meal everyday. It did not affect her weight though. She had some medical condition which made her stay thin.

There needs to be a Free Flow Pact that ensures the free flow of fuel, fertilizer, and food, and protects the physical and financial mechanisms necessary for that to happen.

God is looking down on us shaking his head.

"I gave you oil and gas to burn and corn to eat".

"Why are you burning your food"?

Force all city and suburban dwellers to save their organic waste for compost. We have for over 50 years.

Transport it to farming areas and compost it there.

Better yet, one thing Chairman Mao understood was that the elite in the education system were a problem.

He had them hauling night soil (human crap) by hand from the cities and towns to farms, encouraged at the point of an SKS.
