The old debate about whether drivers in New Jersey should be able to pump their own gas has returned.
On Monday, a group of bipartisan legislators introduced a new bill that would allow drivers in the state to have the option for self-service stations.

Welcome to the 21st Century NJ!...............
I wasn’t aware of this stupidity at the gas pump until one time I was in Oregon and tried to pump my own gas like I do everywhere else in the western US. The overqualified gas station attendant was quite irritated with me for not knowing that he had a special and totally useless government-mandated job.
In parts of the world where we have both the “full service” pumps are generally at least 10 cents a gallon more than self. Self service is a fine idea. Really, pumping gas ain’t technical, and if that’s the best job somebody can get, they should probably just be on state aid.
The ‘soft bigotry of low expectations.’ The legislators paid by foreign elements contended that regular indigenous Americans were too stupid to figure out how to put a card in the pump and then put the nozzle in their own tank. It is all an excuse to keep gas prices high and to support foreigners who probably don’t even reside here legally.
Same thing in Oregon. I was on a rare visit there about 8 years ago and some stranger walks up and starts trying to pump my gas at a convenience store. Looked like a homeless guy. I let him do it out of courtesy. Later learned that that’s the LAW there.
What a strange state.
Drop? Yeah, I remember back in the 70’s when they gave us a nickel per gallon discount to pump our own gas. Gas was like 69 cents per gal at the time. Not long after it went over a dollar, then two, tree, four, etc. Now crossing five. Obama’s target was ten. Biden’s going for broke. But no min wage high school guys pumping gas or checking oil.
I'm guessing you are the type that wears a mask when you are alone in the car, a hardcore rules-follower that has a fetish for bureaucracy.
I use to drive through MJ and thought it was stupid to not let people self serve.
One day I was on my way to Manhattan as it was raining
The moment I pulled into a gas station in Cherry Hill and thought: “ Genius!”
I let the attendant fill my tank while in the pouring rain as I relaxed nice and dry in my car...
Welcome to the 21st century. Heck, the rest of the world was pumping their own back in the 20th century.
Same thing happened to me on a business trip a while back. I stopped to top off the rental car and just jumped out and started to fill up. The attendant went berserk and very nearly called the police on me. I couldn’t help it and just laughed at the guy.
Got self serve gas yesterday in Ca.
The pump had a warning:
‘don’t dwell in the area of pumps
due to cancer causing vapors”
I live in NJ. My experience: women do NOT want self-serve gas. They will vote against it, given the option.
As of this morning Crude Oil is at $111 a barrel. When Biden took office Crude Oil was around $52 a barrel. Gas jockeys are eating into the business ability to stay afloat. So, would NJ then have a problem getting rid of them?
To hell with full-service these days. I don’t need a guy in the elevator to push the buttons for me and don’t need someone I have to wait for to touch my car or bike. I decide when it’s full.
NJ is a Demonicrat state, so the folks there may still need trained and certified experts to operate the gas-pumping equipment.
“It’s a law from 1941 (I believe) and was passed because the State felt gasoline was too dangerous of a substance for the public to handle.”
It is New Jersey. They might have a point.
Drove through NJ and stopped to get gas 2016. Got out, put card in pump and started pumping. The station attendant came out and started yelling at us. Told him I didn’t know that I couldn’t pump my own and he told me I was breaking the law. Have avoided stopping in NJ ever since
