Worked the job for 12 years. Topped out salary at less than $35,000.

She is, or was, an Alabama state employee. I doubt that the state pays lower level clerical workers all that well.

I don’t understand why this is even an attraction. Davis only lived there a few months. As soon as Virginia joined the Confederacy, he made a beeline for Richmond, never to return.

I’ve never understood why slavery in the American South was worse than any other form.

And to continue, not all slave owners were Southerners. Some resided in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and New England. And of course in Maryland (the “Free State”)!

Get off it! It’s NOT all about slavery! Soldiers getting enfiladed through from Little Round Top is NOT about slavery! There is no slave story here! (The Gettysburg VC is all-new, huge, and slathered in slavery homages.)

Really, get off it!

Well and truly said. The destructive and pervasive historical revisionism that’s happening in this country is a crime against humanity. There is however and encouraging truth: Such revisionism is rarely able to completely and permanently suppress historical truth.

I once took a tour of the White House of the Confederacy in Richmond. My tour guide was a black man who, during the conduct of his tour spoke quite favorbly of President Davis.

I spoke with him after the tour and asked if he was aware of the monument to Jeff Davis in Kentucky, a 2/3rd-scale replica of the Washington Monument located just to the northeast of Fort Campbell. He said he knew the monument quite well and had been there many times while he was serving as a Sergeant Major in the 101st Airborne Division’s 3rd Infantry Brigade, the Rakkasans.

From this I surmised that he hadn’t just developed an interest in President Davis for his position as a tour guide and when I raised the issue he answered that he had been studying Davis since boyhood. Then he added that veneration of Davis had been handed down through the generations in his family from his great-great-grandfather, a black man, who served as a Confederate cavalryman and fought alongside Nathan Bedford Forrest.

They need their mythology to absolve Lincoln of being the principle cause of the deaths of 2 million Americans, which included 25% of the freed slaves; a million black men, women and children who were alive when the war had ended but didn't exist when the 1870 census was taken.

The aftermath of Lincoln's War killed about 3x as many freed slaves as the war itself killed White combatants who fought for the Confederacy.

I assume you mean Natchez MS.

So there, I guess they have to mention slavery as much as possible. At least, I guess, you have general history going on. But these battle sites….why mention slaves and slavery beyond just the possibility it was a boiling point for the entire war - but not this specific battle?

Even the little battle site of Monocacy near us, the VC had an ENITRE section about slavery!

How the end of slavery led to starvation and death for millions of black Americans

Interesting article. The headline says ending slavery led to the death of millions of freed slaves. Then the first paragraph lowers that to 'hundreds of thousands'. Then later in the article it's a quarter of the former slaves died or suffered illnesses over an 8 year period during or after the war. Apparently the author has no idea.
