The family of four that froze to death while trying to secretly walk into the United States from Manitoba during a blizzard were already waiting at the drop-off point in Canada when other Indian citizens arrived for the night hike across the border.
The father and mother were the oldest by a decade of the 11 migrants who gathered near Emerson, Man., on Jan. 19, for the organized illegal crossing. Their children were the youngest by far.
Most of the group were issued identical cold weather clothing by unknown smugglers: new winter coats with fur-trimmed hoods, gloves, ski masks and insulated rubber boots, all of it black.
The conditions were frightful, even for those accustomed to a prairie blizzard. The temperature hovered around -35C with the blowing snow and bleak darkness of a featureless remote route, as the group headed toward the border, about 9:30 at night.
While seven made it to safety, snatched from the cold by U.S. Border Patrol officers the next day, after more than 11 hours of walking, the family of four, including a toddler and an older child, didn’t even make it out of Canada.

Let’s just call this a collective Darwin Award and move on.
Hiking into North Dakota in the middle of January. Who knew it’d be cold?
Gee… Don’t try to sneak into OUR country in the first place and this won’t happen.
They were not from Canada, but India. Had only been in Canada less than a week. They left India with the intention of being smuggled into the USA from Canada. This sounds like we have a problem at our Northern border also.
“The Border Patrol said officers are aware of three earlier smuggling incidents in the same area.”

“The van driven by Shand also contained a rental agreement for a “full size passenger van” from Jan. 10 to Jan. 13.”
C’mon guys. 2 + 2 = ?
What an indictment of Canadian Border Services. I know several families who had immediate family members denied visitor visas on the basis that “because of Covid” they were limiting the number of visitors. So how does an entire family from a village in India convince the immigration officials that they were coming to Canada in the dead of winter for sightseeing, when there are severe Covid lockdowns across the country?! Unless you’re travelling with skis and booked at a ski resort anyone would know this was a scam.
“...anyone would know this was a scam....”
It’s Trudeau’s Canada. Nough said.
Jorge Busho is similarly guilty. As is O'Bummer.
It’s like they’re the sacrificial lambs to the discouragement factor. The word gets around and the fewer who try have to find another way.
I live an hour and a half south of the Canuck Crossing at Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The International Bridge soars high above the famed Soo Locks and is well cared for. A number of years ago, a buddy of mine and I went fishing near the big Edison power plant on the St. Mary’s River. Salmon and steelhead are found there year-round.
While there, one of the locals we chatted with regaled us of the town’s latest mystery. Four Mexican nationals had attempted to cross into America...on the St.Mary’s...in March...where the water flowing south from Lake Superior enters the river at a rather less than balmy 33F. Survival time is such water, unprepared, is approximately four minutes and the St. Mary’s is almost a mile wide. That’s not considering that the river is known for its treacherous currents. Our heroes copped a boat ride from a Canadian fisherman as far as Neebish Island in the middle of the river. Not well versed in geography, and therefor blissfully unaware that they had made it to American soil, 3 chose to swim for it. 1 was rounded up and deported after contacting CBP because his 3 friends went missing after attempting the swim...in March...with ice on the water.
If memory serves, they found them a few miles downriver snagged up in the limestone channels...in August.
I do notice that Gordon Lightfoot didn’t immortalize them in a song.
see, if they were poor, they’d be safe and cross the border from mexico like everyone else.
They were in Canada in JANUARY long enough to know that it’s ‘effing cold outside.
Why would the headline writer assume a need to debunk the idea that they were impoverished?
If they could have just made it to South Dakota.....they would have been warm & safe!
The world is replete with people striving to win the coveted Darwin award.
