Two more Democrats, Reps. Langevin and McNerney, announce their retirements

Two House Democrats on Tuesday said they will not seek reelection, bringing the number of Democratic retirements to 28.

Rep. Jim Langevin (D-R.I.) announced his retirement in an op-ed in the Providence Journal. Langevin, 57, is the first quadriplegic elected to Congress and is currently serving his 11th term.

“I have not come to this decision lightly, but it is time for me to chart a new course, which will allow me to stay closer to home and spend more time with my family and friends,” Langevin said in the op-ed. “And while I don’t know what’s next for me just yet, whatever I do will always be in service of Rhode Island.”

Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) said in a tweet that he, too, is retiring.

*** Shortly after McNerney’s announcement, Rep. Josh Harder (D-Calif.), who currently represents the state’s 10th District, said he will run for reelection in the newly-redrawn 9th District.

“Rep. Jerry McNerney has made our entire state proud throughout his career,” Harder said in a tweet. “I’m grateful to call him a mentor and a friend.”

Democrats currently hold a slim majority in the House, and the mounting retirements could put their control of the chamber in peril. Republicans on Tuesday pointed to the latest announcements as a sign that even Democrats in “safe” districts believe their party’s majority is at risk.

“Nobody wants to run as a House Democrat because their majority is doomed,” Mike Berg, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement.

These democrats don’t want to lose and be saddled with campaign debt.

Is anyone keeping score on how many of these are possible pick ups? If we get a red wave it may be easier to flip some of these with the incumbents gone.

I think if they retire they can effectively keep their campaign funds. But if they spend on a campaign and lose, they’re out of luck.

These are Democrats who are not confident of winning, whatever the polls say.

I don’t have a complete list of Democrat retirements, but these 2 seats likely aren’t changing hands.

The last time any Republican won a House race in Rhode Island was 30 years ago. Republicans once went 42 years (1938-1980) without winning either Rhode Island House district. So if something good happens this year, I think you could safely say it qualifies as a major upset.

McNerney’s CA district is very far from being the worst in that hyper-gerrymandered state, but the Rats are a solid favorite to keep it too.

They can transfer funds to a non profit. So they set one up with their wives and kids, and pay them six figures to give away $1,000 scholarships for the next 15 years.

It really is obscene.

Ironic- a month ago i irked a lot of liberals at The sHill by predicting within a few weeks biden’s JA numbers will be surpassed by the number of rats retiring. I believe this makes 32 rats on their way out. Biden’s JA numbers are reported to be 33% (its probably closer to 17%).

Some of these are in districts that have been gerrymandered over the years also.

“These democrats don’t want to lose and be saddled with campaign debt.”

Not so. At least for these two it’s more like “take the money and run”. McNerney has over $300,000 cash on hand and Langevin has nearly a million according to the latest FEC reports, and those reports also show damn near zero debt (literally zero for Langevin).

These democrats are always complaining about redistricting I lost a great congressman in Richard Pombo to Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) because of redistricting, hypocrites!

The house is much tougher to steal. HR 1 would have made it way easier. The cheat limit is about 3-4% per race. Hard to rack up an additional 5% worth of
fraudulent votes in all the individual House districts. The rats pinned their hopes on tossing the Filibuster so HR1 could be shoved through. Remember all of those F’n voting machines are still there.

...Democrats in “safe” districts believe their party’s majority is at risk.

If these folks are leaving to 'spend time with their families' and they're in democrat safe districts maybe dem thugs are forcing them out so they can move commies into their spots.

It's too early to express happiness...

What’s the correlation here?
Something about the ship and rats and the condition of the ship.
Our country is sinking, not of it’s own accord but because of them.
All Democrats need to wise up, self eliminate or be eliminated.

They may be safe, but they don’t want to be in the minority...that is pretty much a done deal.
