A hardline judge has fined and ridiculed a 72-year-old Michigan man with lymphoma, ruling that he “should be ashamed” of being too weak to mow his overgrown lawn.
Burhan Chowdhury of Hamtramck, a community about six miles north of Detroit, admittedly fell behind in yard maintenance after he was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in 2019. His overgrown property prompted local officials to subpoena Chowdhury.
In now-viral footage of the Zoom court hearing on Jan. 10, Chowdhury’s breathing appeared labored as Judge Alexis G. Krot of the 31st District Court berated him. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” says Krot, in a video shared Jan. 12 on social media, and viewed more than 37,500 times as of Thursday morning. “If I could give you jail time on this, I would.”

That’s what Not the Bee is for...
I see I am not the only one with your number.
Some people are dicks and don’t know it. Some revel in it.
May God judge your soul kindly, for I don’t see if there is anything redeeming in you. I pray God sees something because I have not. I fear for your soul friend. May your final cruise bring peace... or the sidewalk.
Sorry Nick... Had to call him out.
“As for the neighbors, they’re likely all mohommaden. We think the Golden Rule is universal to the hearts of men. It is not.”
Based upon the garage decay and growth he has not taken care of his property for years.
Maybe his neighbors did offer and he told them to pound sand?
pay a local kid to do it, this isn’t rocket science.
but you honor him with your words. You try to follow. Many do not even put in the effort. Your dad would be proud of you.
He did do it once he returned.
The infraction, and the fine which resulted in the later ZOOM court appearance were incurred were for the period back in August while the son was overseas.
There’s a YouTube discussion by Michigan Attorney Steve Lehto that covers this case. This younger judge was out-of-line for singling out a sick, elderly man and his disabled wife for not doing yard chores during this short period when he was weak from undergoing chemotherapy. In fact, there’s a good case she was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act for such demands that he and his disabled wife personally do such upkeep of his property merely to keep his neighbors from being offended at seeing unkempt lawns and flower gardens for what amounts to a civil infraction.
She did not show any compassion at all for their condition or the facts of the case, she simply did not care they could not do the work, and threatened him with a sentence that she did not have the power to impose on him for something he could not afford to have done professionally due to medical expenses.
I do think the son should have arranged lawn care at his expense while he was away… he apparently has a well paying job. He apparently did not think of it. That was the mistake here.
She, as an elective judge, may not hold her bench at the next election over this lack of compassion. Her berating of him went viral and she is being roundly criticized by her electorate in her district.
The judge may be a giant d***, but couldn’t Chowdhury have hired somebody to do it?
“Dearborn and Hamtramck are almost 100% now. Both look and smell like the 3rd/4th world. Decades ago, the residents used to work at Ford/GM/Chrysler factories; that’s pretty much all gone now.”
Not true.
We visted Henry Ford museum in Dearborn in 2019. Deaborn is spotless under the muslims and they are gentrifying the blacks out and restoring all the old homes.
All the muslim owned shops are spotless and the downtown area is vibrant. Not a spot of litter anywhere.
If someone is not following city ordinances, can’t the city arrange to do the work to bring a property up to code, and then lien the property for the cost?
If you let your property get to be too derelict, the city usually has the power condemn and demolish it, and lien the now-empty lot for the cost so that the bill will get paid whenever the lot is sold.
Well, that is certainly the way it would work around here!
In addition, what he was being fined for not maintaining, was the walk way behind his house in the ALLEY… from the looks of it, the garage has not been opened in a long time. I suspect it was longer than the three months, so you are likely correct that area was neglected much longer. I suspect that area is actually not even his property, but a public right-of-way that the city requires the adjacent property owner to keep clear by ordinance. Everyone seems to think its about mowing, it’s not, although he had not kept the moving up, either due to inability to do it. That garage looks like it needs some work, too. I do think the $100 fine is appropriate. The shaming was not.
“Did you say yutes were going to mow the lawn?”
“From the video, the neighbor he talked to knew the owner had been laid up after a stroke but was unwilling to help out.”
Oh, he was willing to help, all right. “I’ma gonna call the county”. Yep, gonna help his neighbor the stroke victim by calling the government on him. What a dick.
Honorable Alexis G Krot, has a poor rating of 1.1

Where are his neighbors? I had a neighbor who was hated by everyone in the neighborhood, but when she got cancer we all took turns doing her lawn.
There are still teens out here that will mow your property if you are down for the count and not into having a neighbor bring their goats to trim it-the kids like to do it, probably because just about everyone has a riding mower-lots more fun than walking behind one for sure-I mow mine twice per year-it is all native grass-doesn’t need much cutting, if any. The neighborhood kids charge about $40-50 per 2 acres with a riding mower...
Agreed.
Same thing here-there is a universally disliked neighbor up the road who is such a Karen she calls the sheriff every time someone is playing with fireworks or playing loud music-both perfectly legal here-but when she broke her ankle at work, we all chipped in to do mowing, helping feed her chickens, take the big trash bins to the road on trash day, etc-we still don’t like her, but she is a neighbor...
Just to be clear: I still mow my own lawn. It’s a house in the Houston area and “acreage” is not an issue. It’s just a front and backyard. And you have no idea who lives in my neighborhood. I have a self-propelled walk behind mower and at this point I do just fine. I was making the point that if I could not longer mow it I would not let my yard turn to shit like the guy in the story did.
