'People are going to die': Furious drivers snowed-in on Virginia's I-95 for more than 20 HOURS demand Gov. Northam speed up rescue efforts as they run out of gas and water - and call DoorDash for food! [Tim Kaine stuck}

Furious drivers stranded on I-95 in Virginia for more than 20 hours without gas, food and water are demanding that Governor Ralph Northam speed up rescue efforts as they resort to calling DoorDash in a dire effort to get food.

'We have to find a way to get national guard here. Diabetics and babies down here. People are going die here,' a friend told NBC's Jim Scarborough, who tweeted the quote in a plea to get people rescued faster as the 50-mile stretch of highway south of the nation’s capital was still closed Tuesday morning after six tractor-trailers jackknifed the day before.

Jim DeFede, who has been stuck on the interstate just south of Quantico for the past 24 hours, called I-95 'a complete parking lot' and was growing angry as his woes weren't answered and emergency personnel were not coming to his rescue.

'I don't know who's in charge but somebody better do something because there are cars and families just trapped here this entire time and nobody seems to be coming.

'I haven't seen a state trooper in at least 12 hours. I haven't seen a tow truck in at least 14 hours,' DeFede said in a video posted to Twitter.

Meanwhile, it appeared as though Northam was hoping the sun would help melt the snow and clear traffic. 'Sunlight is expected to help @VaDOT clear the road,' he said on Twitter.

But DeFede said that as of this morning, the road was still covered in ice.(snip)

Virginia State Senator Tim Kaine (snip) revealed that he is one of the people stuck in the snowy pile-up in a tweet early Tuesday that read: 'I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I’m still not near the Capitol.'

Amen. There’s little I can say for my home state, but I will note that I-80 over the Sierra got in the range of 18 FEET of snow in 10 days or so ending last week, and the freeway was only shut down for less than 48 hours. And the terrain over Donner Summit is a bit more challenging than the rolling countryside of suburban DC

So who is in charge on clearing roads? Ordinary citizens? Are all of the people trapped “non-essential” workers? Probably most. What about closing the highways to everyone, before a major storm, except for emergency vehicles and medical workers?

Absolutely.

When we lived in Oswego County, they didn’t even break out the plows until there was 6 inches of the stuff.

We had good snow tires and just drove right through it.

I remember getting stuck in Lancaster, Pa., in February 2000, due to a terrible ice storm along the east coast. I was heading home from S.C., and ran into freezing rain on Route 95 near Richmond. I got off at Fredericksburg, and spent the night at a hotel. The ice was so bad they closed the Spotsylvania mall. The next day I headed to Lancaster as I’d already had a hotel reservation there. I was planning on hitting the outlet stores. The drive took forever, and when I crossed the Pa. line, the ice on the road was at least 3 inches thick, and very jagged. All you could do was bump along at a snail’s pace. When I finally got to Lancaster, I discovered I couldn’t have gone any further anyway as Route 81 was closed. The windchill was minus 40. Tried to start my old VW the next morning, and it wouldn’t turn over. Spent 3 days at the hotel. All the outlet stores were closed. I was sitting in my hotel room one morning, and the power went out. Found out that they were conducting rolling blackouts due to the cold temperatures, and the strain on the energy grid. Never heard of blackouts like that before that trip. Eventually the weather finally warmed up to the point where my car would start, and they had cleared Route 81, so I headed home.

You could be right. I was in the hospital for a week, released yesterday. My wife had mentioned a storm coming. Sunday, I’d been working with my hospital case manager to figure out my discharge. I mentioned it to her, and she said, they’re only calling for an inch or two around here. Which made sense. We’re on the Chesapeake, which often moderates the impact of snowstorms here.

But we got about 10” anyway. I came home via private ambulance as the storm was ending, and it was a bear getting to the entrance of my apartment building, a couple of thousand feet from a main route.

They think. They think the climate change gurus in DC are more powerful than God. And they will do the same thing next big snow because they don’t listen when God speaks.

Truckers got stuck and blocked all three lanes, thus preventing any other vehicles from proceeding - blocked for 53 miles.

Well, they did have 14+ inches of snow in the Fredericksburg area where the trucks got stuck and blocked all lanes of traffic preventing snowplows from doing their job. However, as I recall, every time I see a snowstorm in the news in upstate NY, Wisconsin and Minnesota, etc., I always see a bunch of cars in the ditch, jackknifed trucks and blocked cars and I’m told Yankees know how to drive in the snow. Apparently, not.

One thing I will say for California is we can get six feet of snow along I-80 and most of the time the roads stay open. You put chains on your car and off you go.

Yet they get half an inch of rain in LA and nobody knows how to drive!

A speedy recovery for you, hopefully.
At least you’re laid up during the winter months, and won’t miss any summer fun.
