Gov. Andy Beshear said dozens, maybe up to 100, were killed in western Kentucky after a long and significant tornado ripped through the area overnight.

"We believe our death toll from this event will exceed 50 Kentuckians and probably end up 70 to 100," said Beshear.

The city of Mayfield, Kentucky was hit particularly hard, including a candle manufacturing factory that was operating at the time the twister hit. There were 110 people in the building at the time that it was nearly collapsed by the tornado. Dozens are expected to be lost from there, Beshear said.

I was watching local news this morning to see what they were saying about the damage. And the one that really stood out to me, was them telling people to stay in their homes and basements. Not to try to assist others!!! After the storm was passed!!!!

They were lecturing like talking to children, telling everyone they should always hide and wait for the government🤯

I hit report abuse on myself after thinking about it.
I guess they’re leaving it as “punishment”...

They asking folks that aren’t directly affected to stay out. Much like what is done when a hurricane hits. Don’t want to have to spend resources on new casualties when resources are stretched thin.

I’ve been in the Mid-West many times for work and been unfortunate enough to experience two tornadoes: Indiana 1999 and Iowa 2018. Iowa was the worst because I saw several tornadoes forming over the summer months. I wathced 4 or 5 descending to the ground several miles away and then eerily go right back up before touching down. The sixth one I saw actually touched down and damaged the town and killed a couple of people.
I was frightened out of mind everytime.

From my experience as a lifelong California resident, I prefer earthquakes. Far less frequent, last only a couple minutes at most and are far less likely to kill or injure you and do less damage.

Prayers up for the people in Kentucky.

Sometimes dark humor is one’s way of coping with horrendous tragedy. I’m sitting here grateful that me, my family and friends all over the area were spared. I was living in NE Mississippi around 2011 when we had multiple F/5 tornadoes pass over and around us...while we were in the central room of my clinic we were telling jokes.

Where do you even start with clean-up, after rescue & recovery, and rebuild? It boggles my mind to think of the vastness of destruction and debris.

Terrible, saw a report that they think it was one huge tornado on the ground for 200 miles.

I saw video of destruction this morning and the commentator said that it went on for two or three hundred miles. It was nothing but rubble.

It’s mind-blowing and heartbreaking. The countless people affected by all of this are in my prayers.

They’ll just say “whatever it is now” because now that they are here nothing is supposed to change.

Anybody heard anything from Pig Face Bidet yet?

A normal POTUS would have issued the disaster declaration AS IT WAS GOING ON, so that help would be available as requested from local authorities.
