Fifteen Republican governors, led by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, have launched “Operation Open Road,” an initiative that seeks to ease the U.S. supply chain crunch through a range of state and federal measures, including calling on the Biden administration to remove “burdensome” regulations on the trucking industry and to suspend President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate for private employers.
Lee announced the start of the operation in a statement on Nov. 22, the same day that he signed an executive order (pdf) deregulating critical trucking functions in Tennessee.
“Republican governors across the country have committed to doing everything we can to solve a growing supply chain crisis that has resulted in backed-up ports and empty shelves,” he said. “We call on the Biden Administration to join us in Operation Open Road by suspending burdensome regulations on the trucking industry and therefore ensuring small businesses and American consumers have access to the goods they need this holiday season.”
The initiative comes as the supply chain crisis is continuing to roil the United States, helping raise the rate of inflation to a three-decade high and prompting warnings of possible product shortages heading into the busy holiday shopping season.
At the federal level, Operation Open Road calls for the Biden administration to suspend federal regulations that require commercial driver’s license holders to be 21 years old and lower the age to 18.
It also takes aim at the vaccinate-or-test mandate for private employers, calling on Biden to suspend “the burdensome federal mandate for COVID-19 vaccines for all private employees, specifically for the trucking and transportation industry so that driver shortages are not further exacerbated by an additional barrier to employment.”

That's not at all fair. Half the mess is being caused by California's regulations.

First off, if you are going to require those damned E-logs build some flexibility into the Hours of Service rules. The HoS regs implemented by the Obama tyranny did away with split sleeper berths and forced drivers to drive regardless of conditions or availability of parking.
Parking is another sore spot for drivers. More parking spots have been lost to closure of independent truck stops and closed rest areas.
I miss the good old, so called, outlaw days when 1,000 miles was a decent days work. :7 (

I am more acquainted with GA so that's my example. Savannah/Brunswick has expanded dock, container handling/storage space at the ports plus expanded rail and more is under construction. Further, “inland ports” have been constructed in north Ga (and are being expanded) that allow much more rapid movement of containers from the sea ports via rail. IIRC, this movement to north GA. can be under bond such that customs clearance can can be remote from the seaport. FYI, north GA and SW GA is pretty heavily industrialized via automobiles, tires and carpeting among others.
Solution: get rid of the federal government!
Shhh… then it would mean real, long lasting fixes. Can’t have that, not even Republicans.love a crisis.
The biggest problem is California’s efforts to make independent contractors illegal.
Which means no independent truckers.
Of course, Biden wants to do this nationally.

Exactly.... 1000+ miles a day is easily doable while still maintaining driver integrity in most cases. It’s the noob drivers that are concerning.

Back when I started, a lifetime ago, a driver wasn’t allowed to drive FORWARD until they learned to drive BACKWARD, as in backing into a loading dock.
When I finally got my turn in the drivers seat I had had safety drilled into my soul. Not so much with the 30 day driving school idgits.
I think the longest continuous drive I made was from home to Richmond, Virginia, hooked to a load and only stopped for fuel until I delivered in El Paso, Texas. I slept for seven hours and was on the horn to dispatch for another load.
Dang but the money was good back then.
