WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — Colby College is banning discrimination based on caste, a system of inherited social class, becoming one of the nation’s earliest colleges to do so.
The private liberal arts college revised its nondiscrimination policy to add caste to its list of protections for the campus community.
The efforts were led by a professor who took an interest in caste discrimination across the country and realized the college needed to recognize it as a form of discrimination, the Bangor Daily News reported.
“You have to first name what it is to say: This exists, we name it, we stand against it,” said Sonja Thomas, associate professor and department chair of women’s, gender and sexuality studies at Colby.
While caste is often associated with South Asia, such class-based systems come into play across religions, cultures and countries, and even in technology industries and academia, Thomas said.
Colby doesn’t have a large student population from South Asia, but it’s increasing the diversity of its student population, so “it’s important that we take a step back, reflect on on the polices that we call upon to promote inclusivity and safeguard members of the community,” said Tayo Clyburn, dean of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Asians are no allies of the west, nor conservatives. At least bit the Indians and Chinese I have known in my life (and I live in a predominantly Chinese building in an otherwise East Indian neighborhood). Doesn’t mean that we should have “affirmative discrimination” that keeps said groups out though so I get your larger point.
I didn’t know the Ganges River flowed through Maine. You learn something new every day when you attend Colby college.
Then a phd isn’t required to teach college.
Oh, definitely in the US.
Are you from "Flyover country"?
Do you speak with a pronounced Southern accent?
Are you a straight, white, practicing Christian male?
Do you earn $100K a year (or more) as a pipeline or nuclear certified welder... without a College Degree)?
Then you are likely to be "caste" aside when applying for "sophisticated" positions.
I say leave’em at the dock if they can’t get the lure out past 30 yards.

And fifty years ago I knew a woman from Northern Italy who wouldn’t be caught dead interacting with a southern Italian. People like their tribes best.
Reminds me of the story that Mario Puzo used to tell about the time he met Frank Sinatra in a restaurant, and Old Blue Eyes threatened to beat him up over the Sinatra-modeled Johnny Fontaine character in The Godfather. Puzo liked to say that it didn’t hurt that much to be verbally abused by a famous entertainer, but it did wound his pride as a Southern Italian to be threatened with violence by a Northern Italian. He said it was like being Al Capone and having a knife waved at him by Albert Einstein.
Maine’s Dalits to be given the benefits of affirmative action. Brahmins and Kshatriyas will no longer be given preference.
Yep that’s the deal. Blue and grey Eyed northern Italians.
Although South or North Italians can screw up and not produce like Africans
