Progressive push to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day continues
Rep. Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., slammed Christopher Columbus as a "genocidal maniac" on his holiday Monday as progressives continue their push for the federal holiday to be officially replaced with Indigenous Peoples Day.
"Today should just be #IndigenousPeopleDay," Velázquez tweeted. "And yet this day is still shared with a genocidal maniac.
"We need to take this time to reflect on the brutal history of violence against Indigenous peoples in America and recognize that there is still a lot of work to repair this harm."

It started with some dirty, filthy academics who deliberately spread some inflammatory rumors about Columbus a few decades ago. They’re all unsubstantiated lies, but they have been given legitimacy because a professor said it. These radical academics are no different from arsonists. They enjoy the destruction they cause.

If Columbus did anything he probably prevented the “Indigenous Peoples” from preying on other weak “Indigenous Peoples”. Such is the way life has gone on for millennia

On a serious note does this woman fail to remember that NYC ALWAYS had TWO Columbus Parades. The Italian one on Oct 12 or the Monday of celebration and the Hispanic one on the following Saturday. I think she may have marched in a few when she first ran for Congress 30 years ago

Columbus sailed under the Spanish flag. Maybe Velázquez might want to re-think his position in regard to how the Conquistadors treated some of the natives.

He should talk. HIS namesake, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar was a LOT worse than Columbus. So before he calls for Columbus to be disavowed, he should at least change his OWN family name.

The first people Columbus encountered in the Americas were Indians fleeing other Indians who had enslaved and conquered them.
He armed the slaves to protect them against their oppressors.
That said, I could see how helping slaves would offend Democrats. Democrats, do, historically side with slavers.

Re: “Indigenous People’s Day.” There are no American indigenous people. Every person that’s ever lived anywhere in the Americas either came from another continent or is the descendent of someone who did. Truth matters.
The people that hate Columbus say they love immigrants, but the truth is, they only hate white immigrants.
