The classical composer who died almost 300 years ago, has been at the centre of a race debate for over a century; but does this mean we should disturb his grave?
German singer, Roberto Blanco, has called on the Mayor of Vienna to exhume Beethoven’s body for a racial DNA test.
The request is the latest in an over century old debate about the ethnicity of the German-born classical music giant. Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827, and Blanco addresses the city’s Mayor in a public YouTube video. He states his reasoning for the ask is ‘so that we can see if he looks more like you or me.’
Blanco, who is of Afro-Cuban origin, was born in Tunisia, before moving to Germany and becoming a singer in the early 50s.
The 84-year-old beloved singer has recorded multiple hit albums and appeared on a number of music variety shows.
Why is Beethoven’s ethnicity an issue?
While the question of Beethoven’s race has been in question for over a century, the theory regarding his ethnicity resurfaced in 2015.
A student-run Minnesota newspaper, The Concordian, had suggested a “white-washing” of the composer’s legacy, citing descriptions of the composer as having a “wide, thick-lipped mouth, short, thick nose, and proudly arched forehead”.
Also known as cultural whitewashing, “white-washing” in this context is the practice where historians, artists, and other documenters highlight ‘white’ as the primary and dominant race, consequently pushing or entirely removing ethnic minorities from the record.

So there’s a tour of Beethoven’s tomb. Lo and behold, Beethoven is there, sitting at a piano with a huge gum eraser, furiously erasing sheets of music.

Fun facts: There are extant hair samples which are said to be confirmed as belonging to Beethoven. I assume his corpse does not need to be exhumed to have his DNA tested.
Tests done on those samples about 20 years ago indicated high levels of lead, which may have contributed to the purported insanity he suffered in his later years.
Also at that time, Beethoven purportedly demanded of his students that he be allowed to sleep with their wives, as a requirement to continue studying under him.

Unless there is some dispute about Beethoven’s parentage, there is no point in even giving the theory any credence.
But, but your a racist if you don't care what race he is.. And your NOT a racist if your very concerned about what race the other person happens to be..

I’m French/German having been from Alsace Lorraine stock and definitely not a black gene in my background.
He’s not a relative, there was no homicide and to disturb the body of this great man would be desecration.

Why would his race/ethnicity being different from what we learned have any impact on his musical genius? Who are the racists again?
He had a brother who had a son, and he in turn had several offspring and there are people alive who are DNA related to him... DNA test them.
Well Roberto Blanco, let’s see if you want your grace desecrated in 200 or so years for some absurd, meaningless reason.
They will find his ethnicity as “human” if they test .
