Politicians have for years debated imposing an 80km-per-hour speed limit on the stretches of road which are famous for allowing motorists to drive as fast as they please.
The Green Party has pushed for the move as it would help reduce CO2 emissions and make roads safer, but has so far failed to push a speed limit through parliament.
But the party emerged as potential kingmakers coming third in the vote last week and could enter either a Traffic Light coalition with the Social Democrats (SDP) and Free Democrats (FDP) or a Jamaica coalition with the ruling CDU/CSU and FDP.

80 kph?
Wait. 50mph? Good luck with that.
80 KPH is about 50 MPH. That’s slow for any highway.
Yeah, go from no limit where triple digit (in MPH) speeds are common, to a 50 MPH limit on a limited-access highway, and just watch the ticket revenue roll in.
Leftists,... always there/here to fix what isn’t broken,
so that it no longer works.
I lived through Jimmah Carter's national Double-Nickels speed limit, and it wasn't pretty.
I have driven the Autobahn.
IT IS EXHILARATING!
Our Interstate Highway system is modeled after the Autobahn.................
In Belgium our max from where I go is 120 kph, so that is slower than here, doubt if the Germans are going to be happy about that.
“to a 50 MPH limit on a limited-access highway, and just watch the ticket revenue roll in.”
I got caught in one of the old 55 speed traps by helicopter. Along with the other 50 or so cars being processed by about 10 troopers.
I spent a wonderful 10 days in Germany right before the Berlin Wall came down. Thoroughly enjoyed getting places fast and felt seriously silly driving 65 on American highways when I got home.
Older now, don’t think I’d be happy with driving at 85 mph.... or with people passing me going far faster.
Why 50? Is that some magical gas-saving speed according to Greta? Or what?
Dum, dum dum dum... Ah, Kraftwerk will be a fond memory.
I had my aunt visiting when I was stationed at Geilenkirchen, Germany (on the Netherlands border). I took her to Belgium, and then when I got back to the German border on the autobahn, and the speed limit sign was posted “recommended 135 kmh” - I opened it up. Buried my needle at 130 mph until my exit. My aunt didn’t say a word until I stopped after the exit and grinned at her. She looked at me and yelled: “I wasn’t going to give you the damn pleasure of me screaming!!!!” BTW I got passed by some cars doing at least 180 mph.
Will that include ...
The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the longest permanent racetrack in the world: 21km of unforgiving blind corners and hills, nicknamed “the Green Hell”. Oh, and some days, it’s also just a public toll road with no speed limit.
The car reached 276kph (171mph) at one point:
“The funny thing is that some insurance exclude the Ring without mentioning it. They say the insurance include all public roads except one-way toll roads (in Germany). And the only public one-way toll road in Germany is the Nürburgring.”
Yes, Big Beemers and Mercedes were passing me and I was doing 100+..............
Lived in Switzerland 2008-09 and loved visiting Germany and driving on sections of the autobahn with no speed limit. Diesel station wagon. Mercedes. Wife didn’t like it when I took it up to 150 mph, kids thought it was a hoot. Normally drove around 100 to 120 mph.
Yes. 14 hours to drive from LA to Salt Lake City. Sucked the big one. Increased fatigue resulted in increased deaths on the western interstates.
