There’s a “devastating” unemployment cliff up ahead, and around 7.5 million Americans are about to fall off of it, according to a report by progressive public policy firm The Century Foundation.
That’s because expanded federal unemployment benefits provided by the American Rescue Plan earlier this year are ending on Sept. 6 — if they weren’t already canceled in your state.

I’ve traveled up to Ohio and down to Florida this summer. There are “we’re hiring” signs everywhere. Employers seem desperate for help.
Shortage of truck drivers around, I hear.
According to some article I have read, the unemployment rate is lower in States that already have terminated the supplemental unemployment payments. Jobs are plentiful. So, the only “cliff” these people will fall from is one of their own choosing.
I wonder if this issue and date coincides with Biden’s warning for us not to be traveling?
Something about unvaccinated should NOT travel on Labor day.
Related?
2.75 million are receiving continuing unemployment claims, out of a total of 8.3 million jobless. So how do 7.5 million fall off the cliff?
Why, I don't know. Something...something...something about making an arrangement with someone to do something for them for which they pay you? Something like that? What could it be...
I see what you did there.
Get a job, that is how you prepare for it.
In MY particular case, the government shut down the business I work in.
Yep, I collected the unemployment. THEY put me out of work.
Come what? - June-ish, they started to open up again and I contracted work for most of the rest of the year.
NOW, everyone’s panicking again over the “new” Covid variants..
And so now, it is TAKE the SHOT or we can’t use you…
I’ve had one employer “cancel” me and expect more.
It’s okay though. I am capable of learning to do something else.
I guess my point is, a lot of the unemployment now is all about “take the jab” or else we treat you like a leper.
As usual, out of touch completely. Restaurants in MA closing because they can’t get help. We have staff working overtime because none of the “candidates” from Indeed will actually show for an interview. Everyone need to FTFOff!!!
No there aren’t. But then I guess suggesting people get a job instead of loafing around on a Govt check paid for by those of us having to working 60+ hours weeks cause we are short handed is now considered “being a Scrooge”
Forget RED States and BLUE States.
The issue is FREE States and FEAR States!
Why would Democrats want those lazy slackers to find jobs? They would be more likely to be capable of supporting themselves so they won’t need benefits from governments. Which makes them less likely to vote Democrat.
In my town every single store has a help wanted sign.
Everywhere I go there are employers seeking employees, often with sign-up bonuses. The only “’devastating’ unemployment cliff” I can think of is for people who want to be paid unemployment compensation for laying on the couch and refusing to take available work.
You don’t mean that, I am sure.
Best way to prepare:
GET OFF YOUR A$$ and WORK!
