Improvements to school ventilation systems and doubling down on disinfection and social distancing measures are not going to be enough.
As schools across Pennsylvania and the country gear up for the return of students, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday is expected to issue recommendations that everyone in K-12 schools wear a mask, regardless of their vaccination status.
Media reports out of the regular updates from the public health government agency were signaling changes to the schools masking guidelines.
“New CDC recommendations will say everyone in K-12 schools should wear a mask, regardless of their vaccination status,” CNN tweeted out around noon on Tuesday.
In the wake of surging infection rates from the Delta variant, the CDC is also urging vaccinated people in certain areas of the country to resume wearing masks to protect themselves from the highly virulent strain of the coronavirus.
The CDC is also recommending that people in areas with high or substantial Covid-19 transmission should resume wearing masks, even if they are vaccinated against the pandemic.
At the moment, no Pennsylvania school districts are requiring masks to be worn inside school buildings, but that could change.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education, following the current CDC guidance, recommends face coverings be worn by the unvaccinated students, teachers and staff, but does not require them.
Pennsylvania reported 986 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, more than six times the daily average of early July.
The number hospitalized with COVID-19 also continued a sharp upturn, with 430 people hospitalized, up from about 260 at the beginning of last week. The number in intensive care rose to 97, up from 86 on Monday.
The state’s schools guidance also states that the CDC recommends but doesn’t require masks for individuals participating in sports and extra-curricular activities.
Already across the country, some school systems have updated their requirements in the wake of surging COVID-19 infection rates.
California, for instance, is requiring that all K-12 students and adults in K-12 school settings wear masks indoors when students are present. Even individuals who are exempt from mask mandates due to medical conditions must wear a face shield with a drape on the bottom edge or another nonrestrictive alternative if their condition permits it. California schools must provide students with a face covering if they forget to bring one of their own.
The Delta variant is more contagious, making it capable of spreading faster. The World Health Organization called it “the fastest and the fittest.” That means it has the ability to accelerate the pandemic, especially among people who aren’t vaccinated.
As of last week, the Delta variant had not been especially prevalent in Pennsylvania, accounting for 5.3% of new cases. In Missouri, by contrast, it was accounting for nearly 75% of cases; and accounted for 29% of new cases in New Jersey, 19% in New York and 6% in Ohio.
At Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, however, the Delta variant accounted for 10 of 14 positive test results two weeks ago.
Gov. Tom Wolf this week said he isn’t considering a return to tighter restrictions, but will continue to encourage Pennsylvanias to get the vaccination to control COVID-19.
Pennsylvania Ping!

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
I thought the courts had already rendered decision that CDC DID NOT HAVE SUCH AUTHORITY.....
That will get Biden reelected for sure!..............
It appeals to Buy-Dung’s base of Karans and Gavins.
It sure is..forcing a freakin SIX yr old, who are NOT the ones spreading the virus, to wear masks over their faces..truly despicable what has happened to our country..in Sweden, they NEVER had a lockdown, barely anyone is vaccinated, no one wears a mask, and life is NORMAL over there..why, simple, they never made the virus political..they quarantined the elderly to keep them safe and everyone else was able to continue on with life..in the US, the virus was always about politics, power, and of course getting rid of Trump
I was an urban high school teacher for decades. It was tough enough to get many of those kids quiet, and in their seats. Now add to that enforcing a mask mandate?
Oh, my. That would be a labor even Hercules couldn’t pull off.
They can recommend, not require. Arizona law forbids mask requirements by public schools. And our kids are back in school now....
It hasn’t been fully litigated yet. But, it’s unlikely the CDC would prevail given other decisions on the limitations of federal police power.
Unfortunately, what they’ll do is ‘recommend’ the kids wear masks and then, unless the legislature/governor has enacted prohibitions on mask mandates, the vast majority of school systems, which are dominated by liberals, will adopt the CDC recommendations.
It’s going to turn into yet another blue state/red state thing.
If you’re not homeschooling, start. This is outrageous. Who gave these morons this type of power?
The issue is FREE States and FEAR States!
By what authority?
There is an unseen tsunami of angry parents showing up at school board meetings all across the USA. The MSM hasn’t really picked up on it yet, but VA has seen parents do things they were totally unprepared for.
I think this just might be the shot that gets the apathetic to start fighting. But homeschoolers and private schoolers keep chugging along.
The CDC has NO SUCH AUTHORITY!!!
Doubling down on disinfection is only going to result in more resistant bacteria and viruses.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
They can “issue guidelines’ but they can’t enforce them by use of traditional government force methods. The president could try something militay but the CDC itself couldn’t. They are relying on voluntary compliance and the gullible ignorance of liberal bureaucrats.
The court said the CDC has no constitutional power of enforcement or the right to use such means to enforce its edicts. It didn’t say that it couldn’t issue “suggestions” the the Feds and various states themselves could implement if they wished. So again we will see a patchwork of responses across the nation some pro CDC some not.
I was a rabble rouse from fifth grade on. I imagine that I would have led a demonstration to have my fellow students all remove and destroy our masks.
There has to be mask mandates and lockdowns. That way, the Dim states will have mail-in balloting and cheat their way to “victories” in 2022 and 2024.
The CDC can’t mandate this.
And they didn’t in the past.
Your governor did.
