Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) was met with boos while attending a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisc., WDJT reported.
According to WDJT, the Republican senator was heckled by crowd members while speaking to reporters.
At one point during the video, a bystander can be heard saying "We don't need you out here."
The resistance to Johnson comes after the lawmaker issued a statement objecting to making Juneteenth a nationally recognized holiday earlier this week.
“Last year, a bill was introduced to celebrate Juneteenth by providing an additional paid holiday for 2 million federal employees at a cost of $600 million per year. They attempted to pass the bill without debate or amendment process,” Johnson said.
“Although I strongly support celebrating Emancipation, I objected to the cost and lack of debate. While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter. Therefore, I do not intend to object,” he added.
However, the senator later dropped his objection.
Juneteenth, celebrated every year on June 19, recognizes the day in 1865 when Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, emancipating the remaining enslaved people in the state. For enslaved people in Texas at the time, freedom came more than two years after former President Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced a bill to recognize Juneteenth in their respective chambers last June, but it didn't gain momentum.
The bill was later reintroduced in February, and it was taken up by Congress this week. The Senate on Tuesday passed the legislation by unanimous consent, and later, the House passed the bill Wednesday.
On Thursday, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. However, Biden noted that “it’s not - it’s simply not enough just to commemorate Juneteenth.”
“After all, the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans didn’t mark the end of America’s work to deliver on the promise of equality, it only marked the beginning. To honor the true meaning of Juneteenth, we have to continue towards that promise because we’ve not gotten there yet,” Biden said.
WDJT reported that Johnson also attended a similar celebration in Kenosha on Saturday.
On Twitter, Johnson said that he was dedicating the first Juneteenth holiday to Pastor Jerome Smith.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Smith worked with Johnson to create the a faith-based program that connects people with job opportunities. He died from coronavirus complications in April.
His constituents are ungrateful.
They want another Dem party hack in the seat obviously.
They may get their wish..
Juneteenth? What does that mean with reference to its name? That is a stupid name, reflecting nothing about what it means. Flag day, Memorial day, President’s day, Martin Luther king day—but Juneteenth? Why not call it Freedom from Slavery day? Guess the public schools will have a hard time explaining juneteenth......
I expect Jan 20 2020 to be a holiday in the future...
The day we finally became a Banana Republic and the Governtment could finally do what is best for ALL of us......./s
Juneteenth, the racist ONLY BLACK SUPREMACISTS’ LIVES MATTER national holiday.
Appomattox Day would mean so much more but we bend over backwards for this charade where most don’t know the truth about American history. The DNC hijacked another historical event and call it theirs as the GOP as a whole sits in the corner sucking their thumbs. BTW, the “holiday” means nothing to most but just another added holiday for Fedgov and Stategov.
Why even show up? Regardless of what he does he will be portrayed as a Nazi by anyone who panders to this BS anyway.
I heard a lady on the radio say tonight that Juneteenth is an “Independence Day for everyone.” ...And that they were still working to get a reparations bill passed.
Nothing yet has been nor will anything ever be enough. It will never end so long as hanging the past over the heads of The People yields results. You can bet that all the other groups will want their own Federal Holiday and reparations bill, too. Every new holiday will be “for everyone” but only if it recognizes a particular group first and foremost.
It is not a real holiday.
Stop playing make believe with the insane.
Members of the Free Shyt party putting their best mouth forward.
Let’s not forget:
Just last June, 2020, Senator Johnson (WI) and Senator Lankin (OK) proposed Juneteenth as a federal holiday in place of Columbus Day. After the severe backlash from their constituents and President Trump, they both scurried back into line with their tails between their legs.
A Juneteenth celebration? Who would even bother going to that? He deserved to get booed for being a puss. Anyone who even gives this fake holiday any level of legitimacy should be ashamed of themselves.
It was a Juneteenth Festival! ANYONE worth more than 2 dead flies is going to get booed at a Juneteenth Festival!
This is a nothingburger.
Agree and Bump!
Paul Ryan. From Wisconsin probably set up the Heckler
Let’s not forget:
Just last June, 2020, Senator Johnson (WI) and Senator Lankford (OK) proposed Juneteenth as a federal holiday in place of Columbus Day. After the severe backlash from their constituents and President Trump, they both scurried back into line with their tails between their legs.”
Yep. I like Senator Johnson but he can be a squish at times. Lankford is useless.
I celebrate the June 19 execution of the traitors Rosenberg
Naturally, me too!
Well...since they’ll close things down for business I’ll enjoy a long week-end to get ready for the Fourth!
he was at a JUNETEENTH celebration. I doubt it was loaded with conservatives.
