Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted Sunday that mask-wearing could eventually become “seasonal” as protection against ailments like the flu that can also be spread through the air.

He said Americans over the course of the pandemic have gotten used to wearing face coverings, which “diminishes respiratory diseases.”

“We’ve had practically a non-existent flu season this year merely because people were doing the kinds of public health things that were directed predominantly against COVID-19,” Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

“So it is conceivable that as we go on, a year or two or more from now, that during certain seasonal periods when you have respiratory-borne viruses like the flu, people might actually elect to wear masks to diminish the likelihood that you’ll spread these respiratory-borne diseases,” Fauci continued.

LOL! The Japanese and many Koreans and Chinese seem to be terrified of having contact with the outside air. When I did the Camino de Santiago, you could pick out the Japanese or Korean pilgrims because they were wearing masks, huge hats, and strange canvas sleeves that covered their arms. Partly this was to avoid getting a suntan, since being darker was considered being lower-class among the Japanese and the Koreans (probably the Chinese, too, although I saw only a couple, not mask or protective suit wearing, who were actually Chinese Catholics living in the US).

However, the reason they wear masks a lot in Japan and China (not Korea, to my knowledge) is because they hope this will protect them from their awful air pollution. It might help with that, if the soot particles are bigger than virus particles, but it’s no use against a virus. However, they’ve being doing this for so long that it doesn’t bother them.

That said, they only wear them outdoors, not like Crazy Uncle Joe, who wears his on Zoom meetings in case the virus can teletransport. And who is freaking out every Dem in the country and making them go out and order another gross of masks.

All scientists have the same evidence. What folks are calling science is actually the interpretation of evidence. If the evidence doesn’t fit.. manipulate it. I am okay with mask kneelers, not okay with their forcing it on others. When people wear a mask in their car, I know they are devoid of thinking for themselves. When a very frail and sick person wears one, I respect their fear.

The graphic is not too far from the reality in Hong Kong, which is suffering draconian social control in the guise of preventing widespread Wuhan flu infection.

And in this country, primarily in the blue states we have armies of Karen's ruthlessly enforcing offensive "emergency" regulations designed to control our behavior for the same amorphous goal...controlling a viral disease that is probably ubiquitous and empirically with about the same mortality and morbidity as a bad seasonal flu. And more disturbing, much less dangerous than other diseases that are allowed to run rampant in our country. Think back to the 1980s, when AIDS was uncontrollable, but the powers-that-be, in particular Anthony Fauci, refused to use proven public health methods to isolate carriers of the disease, and in fact allowed them to infect the nation's blood supply, which condemned to death thousands of hemophiliacs.

So spare me the tired and easily refuted claim that our current situation is simply a scientific response to a dangerous disease. Similar responses to dangerous situations would never be accepted, and would trigger immediate and appropriate legal responses. Just imagine if Fredo The Elder (Andrew Cuomo) announced that until the murder rate in the worst precincts in NYC dropped to the background level of the rest of the country, all people above a certain age were subject to search for weapons. Or that policemen would be posted in every supermarket to search all morbidly overweight people for prohibited foods.

Those are ridiculous and unacceptable examples of government overreach, yet we are currently tolerating similar insults to our rights, and looming on the horizon are even more insidious measures. Vaccine passports, segregation of the vaccinated from the unvaccinated, and many more degradations of our rights as free people are coming, and soon.

How different is a vaccine passport compared to the yellow star of Nazi Germany, or a letter from the Red Guards allowing travel to the cities, or an ID card allowing one entrance into a communist party food store in Moscow?

The advent of incredibly fast computers, completely interconnected, and vast databases that can be accessed from literally anywhere with a cellular connection makes the Nazis and the Soviets and the Chinese communists mere dilettantes compared to the current surveillance state.

Papers could be forged...badges could be manufactured...the authorities could be evaded (at least for a time). But how many of us have the technical knowledge and skills to evade a vaccine passport requirement? Or avoid being tracked with our cell phones and internet log-ons and electronic toll systems and credit cards and facial recognition systems and license plate readers and on and on and on.

We are in the midst of a profound shift to authoritarian rule, but this time the tools available to those in power are orders of magnitude more powerful than even the infamous East German Ministry For State Security had!

The dystopian novels of the past predicted exactly this, but they were warnings...and we ignored them.

Years ago I visited Japan to see an electron microscope that our lab was considering purchasing. I noted many wearing masks. I asked my host about this and he told me that people were trying not to spread colds and flu. Cities like Tokyo have a high enough population density that it can be a real problem. People were trying to prevent the spread. of their illness. Think of it as serving your neighbor.

My wife caught covid-19 just before Christmas last year because many of her students had attended a party the week before Christmas and they infected other students and faculty. She was running a high fever. Happily, she has been teaching for several years and her immune system is pretty strong. Still, she was very sick and down for almost a week. A little compassion and consideration for those around you makes healthy communities.

I admit that I got tired of seeing Dr. Faucci on TV. Dr Birx seem less enamored with the publicity. The initial briefings from Gov Coumo were helpful, but it seemed like he got enamored with the limelight. The Department of Health did a good job reporting case counts and many of us used their data analysis (nicely collated by the New York Times) to let us do our own analyses for state and county results. We the people fund this work so we deserve access to the data.
