India is currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, especially in the state of Maharashtra, which accounts for half of the country's active cases. On Friday, India experienced a record number of daily cases that exceeded 330,000. Deaths also set a record high of 2,263. Reports of hospitals running out of beds and oxygen are common.
The extent to which B.1.167 is responsible for the current surge is unclear. It has been detected in 10% of the samples that have been genomically sequenced in India. But scientists say more data are needed.
"It seems to be the case, but we cannot say it scientifically. We cannot say so as we have sequenced very small numbers of samples, some 15,000 so far, and we so do not have adequate data to conclude that the B.1.617 variant is responsible for the surge," Dr. Vineeta Bal, an immunologist and a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, recently told News 18, a news channel in India.

It’s killing the young as much as the old. I have been reading news accounts from India the last week or so.
People who get it start to get sick and 5-8 hours later are dead.

What a coincidence that this variant popped up during serious hostilities with China. Fortunately for us, the US waved the white flag on Nov. 6th.
Would like to see the US do a “Berlin airlift” delivery of vaccines. (Even better, of treatments- but there are so few and so little of them.)
I don’t know though, I have the impression that getting a vaccine when infected risks cyclostine (sp?) storm- not sure about that. But, if so, would be very risky with the state the med system is in there now.
Budesonide and steroids are the treatments they recommend for those who can’t access the medical system there.
With less than 1% of India’s population vaccinated how can thr possibly conclude anything about the effectiveness of vaccines against it?!?

Million other places did.. now that the ya are, the utter ineffectiveness of their health care system is coming to light.
India has something like 1 hospital bed per every 2000 people.. and honestly I think that’s rare is exaggerated.
US for example has 2.5 per 1000 people.
Meaning it would take 5 times the cases per 1000 people to overwhelm the US as it does India... and that assumes everything else being equal, which it most certainly is not.
It’s strange how I’ve always read (and been told by a bio-scientist relative) that a virus mutates in order to not die out. In order to accomplish this it gets less lethal and more contagious. My relative, who works in the vaccine/new drug research field said, “Four waves and it will disappear.”
Now we have a virus that mutates and gets more deadly?
If true, is that evidence it was designed by humans? Or is it evidence that it will die out soon?
I wish we had an actual investigative, honest media.

India was so sure they were 'out of the woods' they were selling excess vaccine to other countries. Very few Indians are vaccinated as a percent of population which adds to this problem...
My understanding is that escape mutations are caused by vaccines.
Still, people who have been vaccinated and are infected by a coronavirus mutation are not likely to develop severe COVID-19 or die.
That appears to be false. There's about a 1% mortality for COVID cases whether or not the patient was vaccinated.
Living in shit and dirty filthy conditions.
People suspected it would take a super variant of this COVID to take hold in such a filthy country.
