Oklahoma passed legislation this week offering protections to drivers caught in riots who unintentionally kill or hurt rioters.
In addition, the bill increases penalties for people who block roadways during a demonstration, KHOU reported.
Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) signed House Bill 1674 into law on Wednesday, the outlet continued:
The measure says drivers will not be held liable if they flee the scene of a riot and injure or kill individuals if they think it was necessary to protect themselves from serious injury or death. The bill also states the driver must exercise “due care” when the injury or death occurs.
The bill was crafted following a viral altercation last summer where a pickup truck drove through a crowd protesting the death of George Floyd on a Tulsa interstate. Several people were injured in the crash, including one man paralyzed from the waist down after falling off an overpass.
Protesters damaged the vehicle as it moved through the group and witnesses accused the driver, who was with his family, of intentionally driving through the crowd of protesters.
However, he was not charged.
“HB1674 also makes it a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a [$5,000] fine to block a public street during a demonstration,” the outlet said.
Citizens saw numerous riots in Oklahoma and across nation in the summer of 2020, the bill’s author, Rep. Kevin West (R-Moore) said in a press release Thursday:
On the day this bill was signed into law, we even had an outburst in the House of Representatives. That thankfully was resolved quickly and without violence, but it illustrates that we are a nation governed by laws. I certainly support the right to peacefully protest and assemble. I will not, however, endorse rioters that spill onto city or state streets

“if they think it was necessary to protect themselves from serious injury or death”
Wow, subjective standard rather than reasonable person. That’ll be an appellate issue sooner or later.
The term swing a dead cat refers to a Cat-o-nine-tails whip not a house pet.
A “Dead Cat” was a bare whip without hooks, glass, or knots in the flails. It “couldn’t bite,” so it was dead.
Just trivia about the term. I would never swing a dead skunk.
Before the internet, people with mental disabilities or problems were alone. Now, they get together to protest. Not all, but many have mental issues.
We already have the right to defend ourselves and constitutional carry makes that easier but I believe this bill was passed in case you have to LEAVE the scene due to crazy libtard rioters. Normally it’s a felony to leave the scene of an accident.
You said they are “dead?” Really?
“Not all?”
Constitutional carry is wonderful, and I hope we get there coast to coast. But discharging a firearm inside a vehicle is fraught with problems. Powder burns, shrapnel injuries, severe hearing damage; it’s not like the movies at all.
I think this law exists for you to be able to plow through a crowd that’s surrounded your vehicle and is threatening your life. That situation has cropped up repeatedly across the US in the past year.
Perhaps a cowcatcher mounted on the front? Sharpened stakes optional.
MAGA!
Cruelty to the dead skunk if you ask me.
and the scenario where there is no opening...?
White people don't have basic human rights.
Didn't you get the memo?
If there is no opening and you are trying to survive then you’d be ok. It’s a totality of the circumstance analysis.
I’m a bit concerned that you show so much familiarity with whips.
You’re not one of those Sado Mashedpotato people, are you?
That’s why I come to Free Republic.
Lots of fellow crazy people here.
There’s a guy here who thinks he’s a blue unicorn.
Real nut job.
I carry one of those devices that scream loudly if you push the button. And I carry earplugs. Put in the earplugs, roll the window down a tiny bit (they’re small) push the button and toss it outside. Anyone ever use one?
Excellent law! People have a right to escape from violent attacks and from efforts to trap them into being attacked.
Oh, if I'm ever caught in that kind of situation I'll exercise due care so as not to run over/into anyone. Tell you what, I'll empty the magazines of my EDC into them first as incentive to get out of the way and not get run over. ;-) That's the only "due care" they merit.
