David McGee, an attorney with Beggs & Lane, is the man the Florida Republican named during an appearance Tuesday evening on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show in which he responded to reports that he is under federal investigation over a former relationship.
McGee served for six years as the first assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and for seven years as the lead attorney for a Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force, according to his biography on the website of his law firm, which is based in Pensacola, Florida.

The New York Times reported Gaetz, 38, is being looked at as part of a broader investigation into local Florida official Joel Greenberg, a political ally who was indicted last summer on an array of charges, including sex trafficking of a minor and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.
Investigators are said to be examining whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship two years ago with a girl believed to have been 17 at the time and paid her to travel with him. Specifically authorities are trying to determine whether he violated federal sex trafficking laws.
Gaetz told Carlson that the FBI, alongside the Department of Justice, had his father wear a wire to eavesdrop on conversations between him and McGee, who the lawmaker alleged was trying to receive $25 million in exchange for making the allegations disappear. The Florida Republican said his father was set to catch McGee on Wednesday in the act demanding "4.5 million" as a "down payment" on the "bribe," adding further that the New York Times leak hampered the investigation.

a source close to Matt Gaetz who told us this report is completely false. Gaetz is not the target of the investigation. We were also told none of the women he was seeing were underage.

It's possible that he's concerned about pending legal actions and has to take care not to disclose confidential information. There's also possible embarrassment about traveling with young, but legal age, female companions.

Agree, however even the fake impeachments had something for the deep state to put their footing on as ridiculous and innocent as they were, (the perfect phone call and the Jan.6th protest).

McGee's salad days are long over so it's easy to imagine this is yet another in a long string of old Democrats who make a vainglorious attempt to be relevant long after falling off the Donkey Cart.

Obviously a 17 year old would be more sinful and is still a crime but it is still sad. A politician would not have righteously stated that he was fornicating with an adult in times past. America has really slidden.

The lawyer [part of a Pensacola law firm which, if I’m not mistaken, is very tight with Democrats]... was trying to extort money from Gaetz’s family, not from Gaetz himself, in the hope that the extortionist could get the family to believe something Gaetz himself would know wasn’t true and try to buy the lawyer’s silence to protect the family reputation. Part of the extortion may have been that the family had to keep the details from Gaetz himself or the extortionist would release info or something bad could happen to Gaetz or his fiance. Sounds like his Dad didn’t buy into what the extortionist was claiming to have on Gaetz, and went to the FBI.
The extortion was of Gaetz’s family —indirect, not just with him. The extortionist probably didn’t want Gaetz to know because Gaetz would know if the material was true or not, so the extortionist extorted Gaetz’s father secretly behind Gaetz’s back.
Why else would an extortionist go to the family rather than speak to the target directly?
I was wondering where the $25 million extortion plot came from since Matt Gaetz has a net worth of only $500K or so. Then I read that his father Don Gaetz has a net worth of $30 million. So, this does seem like extortion against the father, I doubt there is much truth to the allegations. Likely there is some “adult” female 18+ in the picture, but no one underage.
