David McGee, an attorney with Beggs & Lane, is the man the Florida Republican named during an appearance Tuesday evening on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show in which he responded to reports that he is under federal investigation over a former relationship.
McGee served for six years as the first assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and for seven years as the lead attorney for a Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force, according to his biography on the website of his law firm, which is based in Pensacola, Florida.

The New York Times reported Gaetz, 38, is being looked at as part of a broader investigation into local Florida official Joel Greenberg, a political ally who was indicted last summer on an array of charges, including sex trafficking of a minor and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.
Investigators are said to be examining whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship two years ago with a girl believed to have been 17 at the time and paid her to travel with him. Specifically authorities are trying to determine whether he violated federal sex trafficking laws.
Gaetz told Carlson that the FBI, alongside the Department of Justice, had his father wear a wire to eavesdrop on conversations between him and McGee, who the lawmaker alleged was trying to receive $25 million in exchange for making the allegations disappear. The Florida Republican said his father was set to catch McGee on Wednesday in the act demanding "4.5 million" as a "down payment" on the "bribe," adding further that the New York Times leak hampered the investigation.

Gaetz didn’t do himself any favors on Tucker last night.
Tucker gave him open air time to explain this story and yet, (I agree with Tucker’s assessment), that by the end of the interview I was more confused than before it.
I didn’t like the way Gaetz tried to pull Tucker to his side by bringing up the sexual assault hit job done on Tucker and claiming, “you know what this is like”. Also Gaetz recalled a lunch he had with Tucker in which he introduced the woman Gaetz was with and Tucker said afterward he had no idea what Gaetz was talking about.
Gaetz said his family was being blackmailed for 25 million dollars. I don’t know how you blackmail someone in secrecy for that kind of money unless you have something embarrassing to hold over them....at least some sort of damaging revelation....maybe not illegal but something they can use to stretch past the line of legality.
My thought is Gaetz did something politically embarrassing but I don’t think it was criminal. Maybe he traveled with or had a relationship with a young woman that was barely legal age. I think twice he said specifically he had no relationship with a 17 yr old. I believe him, but that kind of specific denial begs the question, so how old was she?
Who knows...but hopefully he does a better job of getting this out in the open or he will spiral down with no chance of recovery.
It’s always like that especially when they honor someone. I’m especially humored when the honored turns out horrible and on a dime they hate the person. “Told you so doesn’t work”. It’s a vicious cycle around here.
If you were never dating / traveling with a girl 17 or barely 18, why would you humor such a extortion attempt? Would t you just say “bring it, my youngest date was 23 and I can prove it?” Or were there so many barely 18s that even that discovery would look freaky?? I don’t get it.

The confusion is that Gaetz did a lousy job of representing himself on national tv. He didn’t honestly answer a simple question, “when did this investigation start?” It was not last week as he stated. It was months and months ago. Gaetz is all lawyered up...for months. He has now thrown his Dad and an FBI, that doesn’t respond in the media to investigations, into the mix. He now has more explaining to do to clean up the mess he made last night on Twatter and Tucker. Does Dad come to the rescue?

So let me say it in a different way. What emboldened the blackmail attempt? As stupid and evil as the dems are, even they aren’t going to blackmail a veteran politician for 25million in secret based on absolutely nothing.
So what was the something? It’s probably something embarrassing but not necessarily illegal. JMHO
