Volvo says it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. But if you want one, you’ll have to buy it online.
The Swedish automaker said Tuesday that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines — including hybrids.
“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer.
Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035.

China is going heavily into electric cars as they don’t want to import so much gas.
Oil will be used for plastics and other stuff.
That was far from dumb. Volvo going electric only makes a lot of sense for Volvo.
That depends. Ownership is Chinese but all the manufacturing and nearly all the employees are Swedes.
Not so much. Look at the Tesla range.
“Look at the Tesla range.”
I think we’ve all looked at the Tesla range to know that the range of an EV is dumb. There has been zero technological improvements to batteries. None. They still take time to charge and they still don’t go outside of cities.
2032 headline:
Volvo no longer in business.
“What happens when the gas pipeline supply and control system breaks down?”
what happens? I’ll tell you what happens: pretty much the end of civilization as we know it ... THAT’S what happens ...
It’s been owned by the Chinese company Geely since 2010. So they have owned it for 10 years. They haven’t moved it
Tesla model s range is 400 miles on a single charge. That isn’t dumb in any sense.

That’s technological improvement.
that's from 2018. These have increased in number since then
Toyota made 11 million cars in 2020. Volvo made 0.75 million
Toyota can be both and should be. Volvo is niche
That’s an hour wasted imo. I can fill up the SUV in under 10 minutes and be on my way.
BTW how is that electricity being generated to recharge a. Electric vehicle? Solar? Wind? What happens on an overcast day with no wind? Cannot travel!
#21 what happens when 200 celebs sign a petition to stop a pipeline? !! : )
Expensive to buy and no resell value at all.
You want to but a electric car that needs the battery replaced. Gotta an extra $7,000 to $10,000, maybe more.
Volvo is derived from Latin, and the male symbol is also the symbol for the element Fe or iron from which ball bearings were originally made from. I love my S60 it’s quick as all get out gets 30+ on the hwy and will cruise at 120 mph all day if you have the nerve to hold it there.
“Swedish car parts maker Svenska Kullagerfabriken (mmm, catchy), otherwise known as SKF, created a subsidiary in 1915 that was to manufacture bearings for use in cars and the tools that built them. It’s not remembered which clever bean inside SKF thought of Volvo, but it was perfect for the task. It was simple, easy to pronounce and spell, and, being derived from the Latin ‘volvere’, meaning to roll, it was fundamentally suited to being the name of a bearing maker.”
That’s why you have a wide grid.
BTW, what about all the parts in the electric vehicle that are made from plastic, which comes from petroleum? Are those plastic parts no longer needed and if not, where will those come from? Trees? The environmentalists won't let that happen. Glass? Too fragile. So where?
That is an answer.
Texas could have drawn on electricity generated in other parts of the country. Florida,Texas, new mexico etc could be generating electricity in normal times from solar and selling it to the rest of the country.
Plastic will continue to be a use for petroleum, only now it will e cheaper.
