Goodbye gas: Volvo to make only electric vehicles by 2030

Volvo says it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. But if you want one, you’ll have to buy it online.

The Swedish automaker said Tuesday that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines — including hybrids.

“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer.

Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035.

Cash for clunkers. Another ‘great’ govt program that removed a whole generation of vehicles from the parts market.
They simply vanished them by requiring them to be destroyed.

I know folks in Norway who run it with the heater on full blast. It reduces the mileage to about 360 miles on a charge.

It would be worth it - but as I said above, I buy 3+ year old cars as its more value for money in my opinion

Color me doubtful. Maybe they should focus on ridding the globe of fossilized politicians instead of fossil fuels.

I think both have merits. It would be good to have competing options — even ICE have their clear functions (especially big rigs)

Totally agree. Bought a 2017 Acura RDX in 2020 to replace my 17 year old Honda Pilot which I wish I still had. It’s a great car.

Firstly - Norway has lots of sales of electric cars and they work in the cold pretty well.

Secondly - note that this is Volvo - a niche company. This isn’t all.

Tesla at -20F

The car starts immediately - no hassle starting it.

Range drops by 10% to 20% depending on the temperate outside and inside. Still very good.

Try it - you can get a trial Tesla and then see if it makes sense for you or not. If it doesn't, it doesn't

It’s natural to look at a news story in a personal context and say: “It doesn’t make sense because of X, Y and Z.”

The problem with that way of thinking is that X, Y and Z are all confined to an American market where we live and work today.

These automakers aren’t going to be designing cars for North America anymore. They’re looking at a future where the U.S. is a smaller and smaller share of their global market. GM sells more cars in China than in the U.S. even today ... and the gap between the two markets is only going to grow over time.

I bet they drive from garage to garage too.

Current batteries do not perform well in sub zero unless they are kept warm.

Keep believing in rainbow sunshine unicorn farts and their magical powers along with “the government is doing things to make your life better”. I dont. I can make moonsbine to run my ICE. BUt what can you do to run your mattel barbie electromobile the day the govt unplugs your house or a storm comes thru? I can find gas after a storm can you find enough power to charge your hotwheels magic car? Electric cars have a place in society until shtf natural or manmade and after that, Your electric car is nothing more than a giant cell phone charger.

“It reduces the mileage to about 360 miles on a charge.”

Not bad. Yes you pay a lot to own a brand new car.

As I’ve said in my other posts, this is only one niche car manufacturer. There are other types of engines available.

You don’t have to believe blindly - go out and get a test drive of a Tesla.

You say “What to do when the gov unplugs your house or a storm comes thru” — what do YOU do when a storm thrashes all the petrol pumps and no more comes through. The same thing

IfSHTF then ICEs will be affected as much as electric. Think bicycles or horses for stuff not affected by modern tech

“Buick Regal TourX”

That’s really a nice looking little car. Will consider that in the near-future car purchase lineup. Thx for the mention.

Unless you want to drive a battery the size of a car.

Don't be silly, just tow a generator!
