Goodbye gas: Volvo to make only electric vehicles by 2030

Volvo says it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. But if you want one, you’ll have to buy it online.

The Swedish automaker said Tuesday that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines — including hybrids.

“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer.

Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035.

Most whole house generators are powered by natural gas which is dependent on state-managed utilities for delivery. What happens when the gas pipeline supply and control system breaks down? Just sayin...

We would need something like 500 nuke plants built if every car in the US was electric in 9 years.

If automakers are going to go all electric and that supposedly makes sense, where do consumers who want an engine and not a motor go to buy a car?

Just checked. Most recent numbers I could find were for 2019, number of vehicles Volvo sold in the US was between 100,000 and 109,000.

And that, apparently was a good year.

Okay, they can go electric with my blessing.

Who’d notice?

The power is only part of the problem. It is getting the power transmitted that is a problem. How do you get it from the plant to the house for 250 million electric vehicles?

Especially with China paralyzing our politicians from taking any action to improve the situation?

I’m confused. Why does a car with a similar name to a female body part have the male symbol for its emblem.

Anyone pushing for an all electric vehicle fleet, that is not also pushing a crash program to develop and deploy mass quantities of nextgen nuclear generating plants, probably based on thorium, is pushing for economic disaster.

It makes sense for Volvo to move out of ICE.

Your old car will be obsolete after a point in time in any case - say you buy a 2020 model today, it’s going to be obsolete by 2040.

I had a car in 1997 that was pretty good for that year, but now it would be hopelessly outdated.

“they” can cut your mode of transportation for ICE as well by curbing oil sales.

Gas is also controllable by government. You want to get off their radar - get on a horse or use a bicycle/your own feet.

This isn’t the end of fossil fuels, nor of gas powered trucks. There’ll still be a market for them - but there will be a bigger market for electric powered cars in cities etc.

So far they have been restricted to ICE and they haven’t been made extinct. They’ll move their CARS to electric, but their trucks are remaining ICE

Electric cars have yet to make a profit with any company in the world. Not a sustainable business model.

Vehicle range is calculated as long as you don’t turn on your lights, any fans (like for heat), heating or A/C

"That does make sense. Electric cars are improving by leaps and bounds."

And the poor will be put in their place.. They have no need of automobiles, let them keep horses and live in mud huts.. /s

Your questions are based upon the premise that they want that many vehicles. They most likely don’t.

The “we must cut back on the number of vehicles” simply hasn’t been said out loud yet. It will be a move to relocate populations to cites where they can be controlled better, which has historical precedent in communist takeovers.

it’s 20 years down the line. Even if Volvo stops building ICE cars in 2030, the % of cars that are electric won’t cross 50% of total road-worthy cars for decades more.

it takes 25kWH to travel 100 miles, and you’re going to put that into your automobile in say, 15 minutes using your home charger at 240VAC on the input side, you’re looking at a 600 amp service for your house. Most home services are 200 amps, maximum. At 150A / 240V you’re looking at about 1.5 hours to recharge your car, minimum. And don’t try to run your home air conditioner at the same time. “Fast” home chargers aren’t going to happen.

The effect on the grid will then be dependent on the total number of cars charging simultaneously at public “f

If EVs have 250+ miles range, that is enough range to cover 99.8% of trips. So locations of fast level 3 charging will mostly be utilized during long distance travel or in some case cities. As range improves, fast level 3 chargers will be utilized less and less.

To offset power demand and lower costs, fast level 3 chargers will most likely come with batteries themselves. This should handle stabilizing the power load from the grid. This should mitigate most of the heavy power requirement necessary for fast level 3 charging during peak times.ast charge” stations. That’s difficult to quantify.
