I agree. Why bother to argue a case since they've already decided how they'll vote anyway? There's not a single Democrat with the integrity to vote Not Guilty even if you rubbed their noses in the evidence. This is one way to deny the jurisdiction that the Senate is claiming.

Donald Trump is not the president of the United States.

The Senate has nop jurisdiction to try Donald Trump.

Not appearing is a way of not complying with a false jurisdiction. Usually a Notice of Non-Appearance is filed stating that the Defendant denies the jurisdiction of the Senate to Try him and the reason why.
