President Donald J. Trump officially became the first US president to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, paving the way for a Senate trial that could come after his term ends.
Lawmakers who have been in favor of impeaching Trump just days before he leaves the White House argue the goal is not just to remove him from office, but also to prevent him from ever becoming president again.
"He must go," argued House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday. "He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love."
The single article of impeachment charges President Trump with engaging "in high crimes and misdemeanors by inciting violence against the government of the United States."
"We know we experienced the insurrection that violated the sanctity of the people's Capitol, and attempted to overturn the duly recorded will of the American people. And we know that the President of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion against our common country," Pelosi claimed.
The impeachment vote took place as National Guard troops protected the Capitol and the House Chamber.
Ten Republicans joined every House Democrat voting in favor of impeachment, while the majority of House Republicans argued impeaching Trump would only add fuel to the fire.
"A vote to impeach would further divide this nation," said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). "A vote to impeach will further fan the flames of partisan division."
McCarthy believes the president should have been censured for his role in the Capitol attack, not impeached. "The president bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters," continued McCarthy. "He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding."
Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-SC) says both sides share in the blame for the unrest around the country.
"Republicans and Democrats need to acknowledge this is not the first day of violence we've seen. We've seen violence across our country for the last nine months," said Mace. "And we need to recognize, number one our words have consequences, that there is violence on both sides of the aisle, we've contributed to it, we need to take responsibility for our words and our actions, we need to acknowledge there is a problem, take responsibility for it and stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution."
Following the historic vote on impeachment, Trump issued a video calling for no violence, vandalism, or lawbreaking as he prepares to leave office.
"Now, I am asking everyone who has ever believed in our agenda, to be thinking of ways to ease tensions, calm tempers, and help to promote peace in our country," said Trump in the video.
President-elect Joe Biden released a statement saying he hopes that "Senate leadership will find a way to deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not reconvene the Senate until January 19th, ensuring a Senate impeachment trial would not begin until the first weeks of Biden's presidency.
Impeach him will make him stronger than ever. And as we have learned the constitution is a living document and doesn’t really mean what it says, so if Trump were to win the vote in 24, what are they going to do about it?
They KNOW he is their GREATEST threat in destroying their obamian deep state agenda, the death of America.
how exactly will impeaching anyone keep them from running for president again?
That’s part of it I’m sure but it seems like, having successfully assaulted us, they’re now “assaulting through the objective” and consolidating and reorganizing and preparing for the counter attack. This is a precision, well thought out military like attack against us more than Trump. IMHO.
Trump should not and would not accept a pardon from Biden. A pardon would be acknowledgement of wrong doing on Trump’s part.
He should tell Biden to Go “F” himself.
Stalin would be proud.
Another benefit is to send a warning to those who are not an Insider who would consider running for office.
Why would ANYONE waste time and money to run for POTUS when dominion machines are being used? That’s like putting your life’s savings into a video poker machine. There will always be ONE predictable outcome and it won’t favor a return on your investment.
Actually I think Trump could do more damage to THEIR side if he was a private citizen.
Just look at what Soros has done.
If found guilty, it’s part of the punishments.....................
I believe if the Senate carries out Phase 2 and actually votes to remove him, the statute indicates that he can never hold a government post again.
It’s the conviction that matters.
One of the possible punishments for Impeachment is to be barred from every holding an office in the federal government.
Trump should run against Schumer in 2022 for the senate seat of NY
That would be an interesting race
They only made him stronger.
Ideology aside, I consider Biden too old for the job at 78. In 4 years, Trump will be 78 and I will consider him too old for the job as well.
I love what he did for the country during his term, but the temperament of people does NOT improve with age and he has already been on the edge.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green plans to file impeachment charges on Biden’s on his first day in office.
With his covert connections with China many more should ensue.
But if they beat him so easily this last time, why would they be worried?
This is, defacto, admission that he won the election.
The Uniparty is irate that Donald Trump won the 2016 election and have been doing all they can since then to ensure that no outsider even considers running for the office again.
President Trump will forever have the honor of The Last Legitimate President of These United States. Everyone else from him forward is correctly identified as a fraud and a Deep State pawn.
