Engine Trouble: The 1 Thing Holding Back China’s New Warplanes
https://nationalinterest.org/ ^ | November 21, 2020 | by David Axe

Beijing has succeeded in copying and stealing their way forward, but they have hit a snag.

The Chinese military is building up a meaningful force of J-20 stealth fighters, Y-20 strategic airlifters and other high-tech military aircraft while also developing a new stealth fighter, fighter-bomber and heavy bomber.

But for all of these advancements, Chinese industry still is struggling to manufacture arguably the most important subsystems for these new planes. Their engines.

Aviation website Alert 5 spotted a stock-exchange filing by the Hebei subsidiary of China’s Central Iron & Steel Research Institute. The filing including production projections for military engines for the next decade, and reveals some startling shortfalls.

Production and development gaps could result in the latest Chinese warplanes flying with older engine models, including imported Russian motors that might be underpowered and unreliable. The mismatch between airframes and engines could be a drag on the overall performance of Chinese military aircraft.

They should send the Blueprints to Junction. I’m sure the Rocket Engineers hanging out there could figure it out for them.

“Overall, the Russians build good engines.”

They build good engines that work for a while. But they need a lot of service and that requires lot of technical support.

The Chinese recently bought the Ukrainian gas turbine manufacturer and moved it and the personnel to China.

You realize that the vast majority of students in engineering graduate programs are foreign nationals.....

Many, if not most, universities have totally different requirements for admission into the engineering and science courses.

I was in the College of Engineering at a major university from 1982 to 1984 (my graduation) and the grade-point requirement for US student to enter started at 3.2 in 1983 to 3.3 in 1984.The grade-point requirement for foreign students was the university average, which was 2.2.

The engineering folks proudly announced the increase in foreign student numbers and touted how inclusive they were. Of course, we US students were paying between $40 (in-state) and $90 (out-of-state) per credit hour and the foreigners were paying between $900 and $975 per credit-hour.

This was all about the Benjamins and the university didn't care one bit about educating US students to be future engineers and scientists.

Looks like a mock-up, not a real plane.

Exactly.

All about "filling chairs with asses" in order to monetize overpriced real estate.

Testing is problematic for the Chinese because it gives them a chance to fail so they don’t do it. If you never test, you never fail.

You definitely know something about Chinese people.

Don’t worry, Biden will sell them the technology and machinery to manufacture them.

Not near as good as engines from the west.

Not to worry, Biden will get it for them. He’s bought and paid for in advance.

No.
Form follows function.
That’s what a stealth bomber is going to look like.
