WSB radio just announced Trump will not participate in the virtual debate next week. That's all I have so far.

Edited to add:

Pres Trump: "I'm not going to waste my time on a virtual debate." Fox Business interview with Maria Bartiromo

The virtual debate gives the media too much power to cut Trump’s microphone. If in the same room, Trump could vocally protest and likely would be caught on moderator’s or Bidens mic.
If Trump does decide to do the debate virtually he needs to livestream his end to avoid being silenced.

P.S. — A “virtual town hall” is one of the dumbest formats you can ever have for a nationally televised event. It’s like broadcasting the Super Bowl with the competing teams playing in two different stadiums.

For what it’s worth, while I fear we are losing this election I do not believe in averaging polls. We have a poll that said Trump was ahead by one point. We have a poll that says Trump is behind by 14 points. Does that mean the true answer is Trump is behind by 7 points? What if he’s actually ahead by 1?
Averaging bad polls is silly.

Agreed. A virtual debate helps Biden
...
And a virtual debate would give credence to the left and discredit President Trump saying that our country is safe. By participating in a virtual debate President Trump would perpetuate the belief that the country is not safe and give fodder to MSM in that vein..

“My best explanation is that Trump’s internal polling shows him surging and he has nothing to gain from the exposure.”

Bingo I got that info last night from one of my connections!

Apparently neither campaign was informed ahead of time.

The decision is not even-handed.
Trump has had the virus. He's immune. He need have no concern. A virtual debate does not help Trump at all. The decision to have a virtual debate is 100% because of Joe. Joe is afraid. He is old and frail. The debate commission just took it upon itself to do Joe a big favor and unilaterally decide to have a virtual debate.

They've picked their favorite. Which, of course, also explains the choice of moderators.

Unbelievable that the CPD wouldn’t at least have first asked Trump if he’d agree before announcing their “decision”. That in and of itself smells to high heaven.

To me, this is a “how do we deal with Trump constantly interrupting Biden” play that they’ll position as being in response to the risk from COVID.

If Biden and Trump are in the same room, there’s no way for them to control Trump. Even muting his mike. But if it’s virtual, they can simply turn off the video of Trump completely and we wouldn’t even know if he’s trying to respond..

This also smells of “holy crap, Pence kicked Harris’s a$$ so let’s change the subject - QUICK!”..

You might understand Trump a bit better if you read it (if that’s a goal). I’ve admired the depth of your posts and I’m sure you’ll find it a very quick, easy read.

Let’s begin with the premise that Trump wants a live debate.

Someone throws a virtual debate on the table as an offer, in public, without discussing it with him.

Trump refuses.

Are they negotiating? What do you think the next step will be?

If there is no second debate do you really think there will be a third one?

Well the third one is still scheduled as far as I can tell. Unless one of the candidates pulls out of the third one why wouldn't there be?

Perhaps it might not happen if the CPD decides to have it as remote as well and if Trump stands firm on saying he won't waste his time on a remote one. I can't be sure.

But I can't see why not having a second debate means there is no third (excepting that you would call it the second counting ones actually taking place--while its still the third counting those that were scheduled).

The debate committee is only active for four days every four years. They live for these debates then slink back into obscurity.

They NEED these debates to occur otherwise they are personal failures.

There will be a live debate on Tuesday.

Trumps political instincts are good, and he knows what they are capable of.

There are so many ways to cheat in a virtual debate. This would not be a real debate at all.

President Trump should not even have done any debates at all, not with hard core Trump haters like Chris Wallace “moderating and the next guy being a hard core never Trumper.

With the unilateral debate format decisions, expect the town hall to occur with Biden and his sidekick CPD modulator. The result: a 90 minute Biden infomercial free of charge to the Biden campaign.
