The Multnomah County Sheriffs Office on Friday night warned residents of Corbett not to set up illegal checkpoints, even if their stated purpose was keeping the community safe.
The admonition came hours after the sheriffs office said deputies responded to reports of a brush fire near Corbett, and discovered fireworks near the scene.
Neighbors heard several pops, spotted the flames and quickly extinguished the blaze, deputies said.
The sheriffs office tweet about the fireworks was shared nearly 5,000 times on Twitter.
Hours later, the sheriffs office said residents had set up checkpoints around the town.
While we understand their intent is to keep the community safe, it is never legal to block a public roadway or force other citizens to stop, the sheriffs office said in a tweet around 9 p.m. Friday. This type of action increases the risk of injury to everyone at one of these roadblocks. We have had extra deputies patrolling Corbett all day and will through the rest of the weekend."
The sheriffs office did not say whether the groups of people left when asked or how many people they had contacted. The agency has not said if investigators learned more about who lit the fireworks that sparked the short-lived fire.
Fears of violence have sparked anecdotal reports of vigilantism across the state, after several right-wing groups began spreading false rumors that the devastating wildfires were started by anti-fascists. Investigators are looking into at least one of the fires as possible arson, but authorities have uniformly stated that there is no evidence to suggest any of the fires are politically motivated.
Law enforcement agencies have increased patrols in fire-affected regions to deter thieves from breaking into evacuated homes and business.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reporter Sergio Olmos and two independent journalists were approached Thursday by armed men in Molalla who told them to leave the city, Olmos said on Twitter. Photos posted by Olmos and a second journalist show armed men standing by the road and looking at the reporters.
I was interviewing a couple, two men with rifles approached our group and asked what we were doing and what were taking pictures of, Olmos said Thursday afternoon in a tweet. Then [they] told us it was time to leave.
Justin Yau, an independent journalist who was with Olmos at the time, said on Twitter the armed group was wary of outsiders based on rumors of arsonists starting fires in the area.
BTW, anarchists sometimes disguise themselves as "independent journalists."
They were using M80s to start fires too.
They lie
Just say leftist marxists are starting fires to burn down the country and take over the government
Illegal to block roadways....unless you are BLM or Antifa...
BS...Residence check-point for safety. If you have no business in...get out and go back.
"Authorities" are lying - and will never again be believed by critical observers.
Right wing groups? Amish? Presbyterians? Which right wing groups.?.?
Idividual citizens who have seen arsonists at work, reported it to police and then tell other people about what they saw are now labeled “right-wing groups”.
The Oregonian has been left-wing for a long time.
So I guess leftists are calling eye witnesses, the police and the county sheriffs LIARS?
NEWS
Police Arrest Multiple Suspects In Connection With West Coast Wildfires
Law enforcement agencies across the West Coast have arrested multiple alleged arsonists accused of intentionally setting fires while hundreds of blazes wreak havoc in several states.
The Lane County Sheriffs Office (LCSO) in Oregon announced in a Facebook post on Sept. 1 that it had arrested 44-year-old Elias Newton Pendergrass on a first-degree arson charge in connection with the Sweet Creek Fires.
The arrest was the result of a joint investigation between the LCSO and the Oregon State Police.
On Tuesday, a suspect ignited two brush fires in Oregons Dexter State Recreation Area, KMTR reported.
Witnesses caught the middle-aged suspect in the act, and told police he took off in a green SUV.
The witnesses were able to get the fires out before first responders arrived, KMTR reported.
Police in Spokane, Washington, arrested 36-year-old Christine Comello for allegedly starting at least two fires in the area, KHQ reported.
Witnesses told police they saw Comello start one fire outside a commercial business, and accused her of setting a second fire next to an oil drum beneath a tree, police said.
She has been charged with first-degree arson, second-degree arson, and burglary, KHQ reported.
Comello also had an active warrant for reckless burning and burglary, which was tied to a prior incident involving her allegedly setting fires at a Spokane Valley business several weeks earlier, according to YakTriNews.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) District 1 Public Information Officer Trooper Ryan Burke announced in a tweet on Wednesday that officers from multiple jurisdictions apprehended a 36-year-old man for setting a fire in the median of SR-167 in Puyallup.
The Gateway Pundit identified the suspect as Jeffrey Accord, a local Black Lives Matter activist.
“BRIEF fire??”
It was only “brief” because the CITIZENS put it out. When the “authorities” can’t act, the citizens MUST.
Why are the articles always biased in support of the rioters?
Communist can do anything they want. But if citizens set up roadblocks in the abdication of law enforcement, the sheriffs department immediately swings into action.
The news article appears reluctant to name the Multnomah County Sheriff, an elected position. Sheriffs office sez...
For the record it’s Michael Reese.
Citizens who try to defend their rights and property are often seen as scabs as far as the police union is concerned.
That and it’s an embarrassment to the politicians and police for their failures. Best to threaten the citizens than admit incompetence or laziness.
FYI....ALL...Corbett is in the middle of the Columbia Gorge Scenic area (@20 miles from Portland,) where there was a large fire set by an idiot 17 year old a few years ago
Thank you for posting that info.
Interesting. Maybe it will be okay for them to do these things if they make up some Black Lives Matter signs.
Hummmm.....
OREGON .... FIREworks ...
*COUGH*... antifa ...*COUGH*
Cant trust anyone stating they are journalists. Journalists support rioters, looters, arsonists, and murderers and want trust from people protecting their communities. Thats hilarious ..... Id as doom trust a democrat.....
