A really important invention listed on that site is the train coupler. Before that, coupling/decoupling cars was a very dangerous job. Your career was over when you got killed or lost both of your hands/arms, whichever came first!

Oddly enough, I have found during the course of my career that computer programmers and IT employees are extremely good at shoveling...so there might actually be something to this.
