It has started: Lefty prof says fleeing New Yorkers not a problem because immigrants will replace them

Blue cities have become socialist hellholes, and not surprisingly, people are fleeing.

High taxes, extended lockdowns, massive crime, and rioting and looting have all driven taxpayers from Portland to New York to pack up and leave their cities, heading to friendlier red climes where rule of law is a thing, taxes are low, businesses are easy to start, and public officials show common sense on COVID risks.  According to the New York Post:

FlatRate Movers said the 100 moves a day it does in the city are very different from previous years.

"We used to move a lot of people from Brooklyn to Manhattan or Queens," said David Giampietro, the company's chief administrative officer. "Now it's the mileage. We're not going 5 miles anymore. It's more like 20, 30, 40" to New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island and upstate.

More than 16,000 New Yorkers changed their address to Connecticut from March through June, the Hartford Courant reported.

United Van Lines and Mayflower movers said it had done 1,000 out-of-state moves from New York City starting in March, with 28 percent to Florida and California, and 16 percent to Texas and North Carolina.

Writer James Alschuler notes that it's gotten very bad in New York, indeed — so bad that he forecasts that the city won't be recover.  His must-read piece is here.

It ought to be a point of embarrassment for these blue leftist ruling claques that people are fleeing.  People flee the chaos of systemic socialism wherever it is found, sometimes on leaky rafts, sometimes by barreling over walls, and sometimes by UHaul, and all these elites can think is, they're in good company.  Like shortages, people voting with their feet is found wherever socialism is found.

And where will these “illegals” work?

Restaurants have closed.
Hotel occupancy has declined greatly.
Museums have closed.
Wall Street is a ghost area.
Few tourists are coming in.
NYers who have money have left.
And this professor thinks low skill illegals can replace them?
Good luck with that.
They will be a drain on NY taxpayers.

Third Worlders couldn't support a megalopolis like New York City in their home country and certainly couldn't support it here. It was those working in intellectual careers who carried the Great Unwashed.

Lose the "IQNY" workers and what do you have left?

How many immigrants can afford $8000/mo rent?

RE: How many immigrants can afford $8000/mo rent?

There are several types of immigrants, the rich and the poor. The rich can afford it, the poor will have to find other means of accomodation.

The in-between can probably afford a tiny place that rents at prices they can pay. If people are fleeing en mase, I would not be surprised if the price of real estate and rents drop.

Beirut will be a garden spot beside the New York City of 2030. People will be fleeing NYC for Beirut. Or Beijing, for that matter.

Thing that struck me about the sign is the message as to who lost the war. The German sentence being so much smaller.

I believe they count the federal welfare the immigrants get as income to the city.

And who are the New York City taxpayers?

Restaurant owners?
Hotel management?
Museum docents?
Wall Street executives?
Tourists, for sure!

New Yorkers may soon be eating their rats.

While lots of New Yorkers are leaving, "out there in Bangalore and Ukraine and Natal, there are people who want to be New Yorkers" who will gladly take their place, bringing their ambition and brainpower.

How may will buy tickets to the Metropolitan Opera?

How does replacing productive and wealthy folks with those that require government welfare and services... Make this work out... Exactly?

Sounds like fuzzy math

RE: How may will buy tickets to the Metropolitan Opera?

If they have the money, I know many Indians, Brazilians and Ukrainians who love opera.

My grandparents landed in NYC late in 1927 with their three young kids. They lived in the Bronx and worked their tails off. Less than five years later, in the middle of the depression, they moved to a rural hamlet in Westchester County and built a home. People fleeing NYC is nothing new.

My parents moved from Brooklyn to the Nassau County suburbs in 1949.

In 1968, they no longer had a need for a house with three children, and a lawn to take care of. They sold the house and moved to the upper-eastside.

I'm going to keep my house. No way I'd move into Manhattan.

Probably another Economics major like AOC.

Just kidding(I know AOC did not have an Econ degree from BU, even though Wikipedia says she does).

I've been a regular at the Metropolitan Opera for nearly 50 years. I have NEVER seen anyone that struck me as Indian there, not working, not singing, not attending. (I'm sure some Ukrainians do attend but I wouldn't be able to distinguish them from the Russians who attend in force. Maybe there are some Brazilians but one doesn't hear much Portuguese or Spanish at the Met.)

Didn’t matter. West Germans were not allowed in East Berlin anyway.

Same with us. There is NO way we are moving to any city. We bought a home in Idaho a couple years ago. We actually doubled our lawn area, went up to two stories from one, and moved to snow country from California. We are nuts.
