Santa Cruz County declared racism a public health crisis Tuesday, becoming the latest jurisdiction to voice a commitment to doing more to address disparate health outcomes observed in the current pandemic and in numerous other areas.
Endorsed by local health officials, the declaration was unanimously approved by county supervisors.
“You’ve heard a lot from me about COVID-19 over the past six months, and indeed COVID is the worst public health crisis in a generation,” said Santa Cruz County Health Officer Dr. Gail Newel. “But there is a second pandemic impacting our county now, a pandemic that has ravaged our country for centuries: racism.”

For better or for worse, I was a transient in Santa Cruz in 1978. There was active suppression of homelessness, that I would approve now, more than owing to theft, to lack of human sanitation. There was then an elite white-liberal upper-crust, now supplemented by an elite non-white, read mainly upper-crust black, Asian and Latino power structure. Your civil sanctity is based on money, not on virtue, not on how much difference you make to your community, not on how much you relate to other, ordinary, common people. It stinks.

My brother lives in Denver, and says whenever they need the town spruced up for a big visit/event for a day or two, they hand out movie passes and food coupons to the bums to temporarily keep them off the streets.
Don’t know how widespread that is, have been meaning to visit him.
Having been born and raised in Aptos/Santa Cruz and being a banana slug ... I retain my membership to the Hometown Santa Cruz FB site if only to keep current on my old hometown. When I left Santa Cruz it was full of loopy but fairly benign liberal hippies. Based on the posts I see on that site now, the town appears to have made to transition from benign liberal hippies to dangerously psychotic marxist leftists. I have not seen another site so full of Trump and America haters. The hatred for any thing American literally drips off that page.
I like to watch “Dragnet.” The drug episodes are a favorite. In the conclusion of an episode I saw recently, there was a reference made to The Department of Mental Hygiene. I can see that making a comeback in Cali, with some frightening Orwellian twists.
I agree that racism is a pandemic.
